How to avoit the ex-vegan syndrome

With a whole slew of vegans becoming ex there are some very clear common traits on how to make a mess of a vegan diet. Gojiman makes a good summary of this

The takeway point, no-one fails on a vegan diet if they regularly eat a varied whole food plant based diet. By the word varied I mean nuts, seeds, veg, fruit, legumes most days.

Hi Andy, are there a slew of vegans becoming ex vegans? Or people saying they were vegan who weren’t. Like the vegan blogger Yovana Mendoza Ayres who was caught out eating fish?

exactly. A "vegan" starts with an ethical stance. I started as a whole food plant based whatsit, but now I consider myself also a vegan because I agree with the ethical arguments. These people obviously never got the ethical message.

A good case can be made that many of the "ex-vegan" Youtubers are by nature self-promoting and attempt to get as much attention as possible. One way to do that is to try many fringe things. Vegan is still a fringe diet to most people, so they start eating a vegan diet. But after a while, that's not fringe enough, so they try out raw vegan, or starch-only vegan, or very long water fasting, or (and I kid you not) drinking turpentine to kill supposed parasites. Sometimes they do this because they're gullible and someone suggests it to them. Other times they just want the attention.

That’s true enough. I suppose it’s jumping on the band wagon of whatever is “in” at the time.

That's a very good point about the effect of youtube. I think this also explains a lot of the "trash talking" that seems to go on (the only goji man video Ive watched seem to be part of a internet feud he'd got into)

Right... If they just stayed on the normal vegan diet they wouldn't have any of the problems they are constantly coming up with... honestly, doing a water fast for 25 days just highlights a deep lack in the ability to think critically....

Thanks for this Andy.

100% these people were not really ever vegan for the animals - most actually were using vegan diet because they had eating disorders and a few things in common like going on extreme water fasts etc. My mate Vegan Vizard made a point the other day on his instagram story that in all the photos on Rawvana and Rawalignment and even Tim Shieff that most of the photos were of themselves and no animals featured ever.. I think there are so many fakes out there and the scary thing is young impressionable people follow them and their dangerous fad diets. Crazycoolvegan - Miles who is a nutritionist made a really valid point in his video about how dangerous it is. I am so over the fake YT people and same on IG. I also feel a lot of these "kids" I say this as they are way younger than me lol are coming across as quite entitled and then I heard it that Rawvana used to fly in a private jet belonging to her family.... that was enough for me. Fake, rich kids just playing at creating a brand!
