Veganism, why is it on the up? BBC News πŸ’š

β€’4 Replies

Hi everyone,

I thought that this was interesting its on todays BBC business page and it's about the rise in interest in a vegan diet and I was interested in their poll as it was very similar to ours and to me it shows there is a growing awareness that 'we' need to take responsibility for not just what and how healthily we eat but how that impacts the planet as well. And thats no bad thing. 🌈

So here's a link:

This really is good news. I liked that their poll shows that mostly people are vegan due to animal welfare issues and then health as second reason in the poll. It’s really time we started seeing animals as souls and not as food. I have to say though we have noticed more companies trying to fight back against veganism like m&s saying they can trace their burgers back to the individual cow. Like that makes it alright!

They will always try to fight back. It's all about their money and shareholders. I just wonder what will happen in the UK after Brexit? The EU gave huge subsidies to the farms. What will they do without the EU? Do you remember when a couple of years back farmers went to Brussels with tractors to protest that they need more subsidies? And bang the EU gave them millions of €. There's a good book about subsidies called Meatonomics. Even non vegans read it and can see how screwed all this is.

I'll take a look at the book.

After brexit I'd expect food standards to decline as the government will be so desperate to get trade deals they'll accept a lowering of standards.

Funnily, the stupid tabloids that have been cheerleading for brexit don't write about that sort of thing

Hey benwl,

Sorry for my late reply. There are a few videos online about meatonomics. This one is a lecture by the author of the book. If I remember he was also in Cowspiracy. It's an important subject. Economically the meat and dairy industry is very fragile, it won't last long. I would call it karma. Hope you and others will have time to watch the lecture πŸ™‚
