I have lost a lot of weight despite taking prednisolone by cutting carbohydrates drastically. It really has been the only way I can lose weight though I also kick started it a bit by combining the 5:2 diet with low carb. The only time I feel hungry now is after I have been naughty and had a carb "treat" but I'm 38lbs lighter now than I was - it has been very slow because of the needing prednisolone but it has been steady weight loss.

Hi Mosey. Have you tried the 5:2 diet? It means you can eat normally on 5 days out of 7 and for the remaining 2 days you only eat 500 (600 if you are a man). You can alternate your "fasting" days if you like, so you don't do back-to-back "fasting" days. My "fasting" days are Mon (after the excesses of the weekend!) and Thursdays.

I've just started it (1 week) and I must say I wasn't too hungry on my "fasting" days. It might be an Idea to run it by your GP first as this diet isn't recommended for diabetics and people with some other health problems.

Good luck!

I agree the 5:2 diet is good as it is also meant to have other health benefits. There is a lot of information on the web. This is the official one:

I have a relation who also struggles with dementia and she frequently loses track of whether she has eaten or not. This may not be a problem for you but keeping a written record of your intake may be useful when dieting in any case. Hope this helps, good luck.

Here's a recipie to start you off!

5-2 Diet Mushroom Goulash

Serves two

Ingredients

250g Mushrooms

1 can Chopped Tomatoes

2 Banana Shallots

2 stalks Celery

1 heaped teaspoon Smoked Sweet Paprika

4-5 shots 1cal oil spray

2 teaspoons Low Fat Creme Fraiche

1 handful Fresh Parsley

2 cloves Garlic

Optional

1 teaspoon Caraway Seeds

1 pinch Chilli Flakes

Directions

Step 1Slice the mushrooms into thickish slices, trimming off any woody stems.

Step 2Finely dice the shallot and garlic. Spray a heavy pan with 1cal and gently soften the shallot and garlic over a low heat for 5 minutes.

Step 3Slice the celery into 1cm lengths and add to the pan. Cook for a further 5 minutes over a low heat

Step 4Add the caraway seed, paprika and chilli to the pan and cook for 1 minute more

Step 5Now add the mushrooms and cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring constantly.

Step 6Finally add the tinned tomatoes and cook for 15 minutes so that the mixture reduces down and thickens. Adjust the seasoning to taste.

Step 7Serve garnished with fresh chopped parsley and low fat creme fraiche. I like mine with rice, but it works well with a small jacket potato or just a slice of bread if you prefer.

Entire meal is under 200 cals (inc rice) 80g portion of white rice (about 85 calories)
