Yes, when you are on such medication it is definitely better to wait a couple of weeks before giving him another cuddle. I know it sounds hard - but if you were to pick up any of the viruses you could be very ill and it is better to be safe than sorry. If you ask the doctor they should be able to tell you how long he will be shedding live virus and when you can go back for a snuggle. I'm not sure about what distance you should keep - ask the doctor about that too.
I was told to avoid my ' great ' nephew for 48 hours after his live vaccinations and not to change his nappy for that time. Ie no contact with bodily fluids.
Yes good advice- rather a 'shame' though! Hopefully, if you explain to him- in terms he will understand-why you can't give him a cuddle. Most children understand, to some extent anyway, about being 'poorly'. so, if you term your conversation, like this the he should understand. Make a big, big 'fuss', of him in a months time (just to be safe). Give him his favourite treat, after dinner of cause- mum will know what it 'currently' is. I do understand that this is going to be difficult, for you both, but, in the long run, all will be well- your beautiful grand-son, and you, will have loads and loads of cuddles, over the coming years I'm sure.
In the mean time 'think' him your love, he'll know!
John has been talking to Public Health England regarding their advice regarding the flu vaccine and being immunosuppressed.
This is their advice.:- If you are taking "any" immunosuppressing drugs, the advice is to have the inactive vaccine ( none live vaccine) as early as possible in the flu season. Which we believe started last Monday. It takes 14 days to sero-convert ( become immune).
The nasal spray vaccine used in children who are not immunosuppressed, is a weakened version of the virus and it is very rapidly absorbed into the blood stream & is also a very small dose. So the risk of someone who is moderately immunosuppressed, who comes into contact with a child, who has "just" had the nasal spray, is very low. ( Moderately immunosuppressed means NOT having high dose Chemo for Cancer or being heavily immune suppressed as in transplant cases ). So it may come down to how well you feel yourself after having the flu jab as to how long you should keep away from children who have just had the nasal flu vaccine.
I am afraid there is no black and white answer to this question.
We do appreciate that the flu jab does not suit everyone and it is personal choice, we are just passing on the advice from Public Health England.
Your immune system is suppressed but I think it depends on how low your white cells have dropped. That determines your ability to fight viruses etc. I was advised to get the flu vaccine.
