Prognosis - Is this forever or will it quieten down eventually?

Hi. I'm 48. 2 years in with T. Triggered by a nervous breakdown or maybe it was the other way round, sometimes I do wonder. Over 2 years I've had all the ENT tests. Hearing tests showed minor loss, I'm now wearing Hearing aids which have helped. I've also got to a point were i can forget about it for a few hours, so some level of habituation. Is there anything else I can try? Not got a masking option on Hearing aids. Like most people with T ive researched treatments to death. Also, am I literally stuck with this hissing for life? People say acceptance is important but part of me can't ever accept this. How can you accept this into your life? It does get me down. I work from home so I know the quiet environment doesn't help. Any hips or tips much appreciated and thanks x

Hello,

I must start by saying that, though I have suffered from T for more than 20 years, I am just a lay person and have no special knowledge or access to statistics. I can be wrong about everything. The channel moderators may have a better overview of cases in general.

That said, this is, I suppose, a question that we all ask. One problem with answering it is that it tends to come up in forums such as this one, where it is likely that many of us have persistent bothersome T, or know someone who does. For all I know, there may be legions of people who are not here, whose T was bothersome, but went away.

My own impression is, however, that it is very rare for established T to resolve entirely. Someone who by one technique or another, or simply by force of personality, no longer notices their T is, for as long as that situation prevails (which may be forever), as good as "cured", but many of them will say that they hear it if they listen for it.

For the rest of us, the T remains more or less permanently intrusive / bothersome, but resignation and eventually turning the mind to other matters helps.

Ok, that is my opinion. I can only say for certain that it is true in my case.

Best wishes.

Yes I have accepted it in my life (as you put it). I keep myself busy. I take my two poodles out for walks often. Enjoy the fresh air, rustling noise of the trees etc. Indoors I like some back ground noise of a radio, most of the time I can honestly forget about it, what I do notice though is if I get really tired then I have to lay my head down for a bit. But I am pleased I’ve mastered it. Don’t get beaten .. mine started over the death of my mother in 2019.

Click on my username for posts on how I get relief (silence) from Ginkgo. How I've succeeded where clinical trials of the stuff have failed - because I do it differently. Not taken daily. None at all for 2 days. Low dose, just 90mg on the day, and possibly the most important - absorbing the Ginkgo via the mouth. Just as chewing the actual leaf.

Hi, I’m 5 yrs in & yes you just have to try & accept it as hard as it is. I was in a hurrendous place for probably the first 3 yrs of it starting - I am taking meds which do help at night - I will do anything to at least get a decent nights sleep! My T did disappeared for 7 months - had nothing at all & believed I was cured but unfortunately it came back . It now doesn’t seem as intrusive though. Still have good days & not so good but defo coping better. They have just started a new Tinittus support group in my area which I’m hoping to get to at some point. Let’s just pray for a cure one day . X
