New sound & louder feel like I'm losing my mind 😭

Hey everyone hope your all keeping well.

I have had a new sound the past few weeks it sounds similar to a steam train / heart beat sound you hear on ultrasound scan, it's been quite loud and intrusive lately.

At night I listen meditations / frequency music, helps me fall asleep. I'm 40 and have to deal with this for the rest of my days 😭 just cannot see the end of the tunnel.

Anybody else have similar sounds?

Thank you for reading πŸ’œπŸ™πŸ½

Hi Ravks,

Sorry to hear about the changes in your tinnitus. My T changes at times, and that's partly because I have a sinus problem. So that's something you could have checked by your doctor.

Best of luck my friend.

Hi yes I suffer with ETD continuous congestion sinus and ear issues ENT have not been able to help over the past two years. The fluctuating in sound correlates with when I am congested. Troublesome sound is hard to live with at times it's like I can feel the sound weird to explain .

Thank you for your response πŸ™πŸ½β˜ΊοΈ

Yes - ditto - pulsatile tinnitus. Not a noise that it seems possible to habituate to. I find I just can't deal with it. I've had MRI and CT scans and was due an ultrasound of the neck in April but after crying down the phone, it's now tomorrow. I just keep looking for answers as for me the prospect of the T being like this forever it just too scary to contemplate.

Hi Suex

Sorry your having to go through all this, I hope ultrasound goes well and specialist can find some answers.

My ENTs have given up, pointless bothering now, I wonder what is the point of going on with life if it continues like this already have enough going on with life as it is.

Hi Ravks

In addition to what Sue, Rosie and Cheapo have suggested, can we approach this situation from the angle of your Eustachian Tube Dysfunction? When this is heightened, is your tinnitus more difficult to cope with? Does that imply that it fluctuates somewhat?

If that were to be the case, just as you have bad periods of time when you're very aware of it, are there also points of time when it isn't as bad?

What about this situation specifically makes you convinced that it will always be like this? Is that advice that you've had from your ENTs? I know that you feel that they've given up on you - have you been discharged or are they prioritising ETD as they're more comfortable in treating that?

Lots of questions there, as is my wont, but they all may give us a picture of how to support you.

Hey Pat,

Thanks for reply ☺️

This new sound is annoying and very intrusive, more so when I am congested it heightens, ETD causes many other symptoms which have been there two years I decongest using netti pot, steaming. That's all the ENT could advise, and discharged me. I had scan all clear, bloods were good. ENT said nothing he can do for tinnitus and focused on ETD.

ETD comes with symptoms of pressure in ears, muffled hearing, cracking / popping, full feeling, pressure in sinus area, never ending.

Tinnitus clinic I attended regular the aids given to mask sound made it a lot worse, advised to not use them now and to try and deal with it. Regards to specialist help I have reached where I could.

I have attended CBT twice they discharge me within two weeks as they feel I have the tools to use when my anxiety peaks.

I become more anxious with this new sound which is always there is like a steam train, I can feel it in my ear, unusual to describe the sensation in my ear, it's hard to avoid, it peaks when I am congested, so I try various methods of decongesting.

Much appreciated to all of you for your help and repliesπŸ™πŸ½πŸ’œ

If it's possible to wear ear buds all day, perhaps you could have your relaxing sounds all the time. Pulsatile T is deffo your system listening to your heartbeat or blood movement, and from what I've read in the past it ca be an indication of stress. And the stress causes the nervous system to "over" listen, a bit like when a wild animal perceives a predator is near. Now I'm not suggesting you actually are all that wild, really really. 😁 But whatever succeeds in reducing your stress could well help the tinnitus.

Thank you for your reply, yes I feel stress elevates it more, anxiety I am facing with recent issues going on besides T I wake up worrying but the things troubling me, but I am working on resolving the issue so I can reduce anxiety and I am hoping T in itself will reduce too. At night I listen to frequency music or a podcast helps settle me, has done so for 2 years.

Life is a test at the moment some things I need to work on.

Thank you for your kind words πŸ™πŸ½ bless you πŸ’œ

I used to use a sound machine with various nature sounds . The only one that calmed my T down was the heartbeat one left it on all night.. Have you tried different sounds ? Crickets seem to be popular .

Thank you for your response πŸ™πŸ½ I tried crickets, makes it worse, sounds of rain, water, thunder and frequency music helps, or listening to some talk on a podcast it settles me to sleep drowns the sound.

I will try heartbeat to see if it helps.

Thank you πŸ’œ

I used to try the different sounds for about 15-20 mins while relaxing, before I used it at night. I didn't want a sound on all night that might make it worse. Listening to LBC , works best for me. Also a mans voice is better than a female voice.

Ps The heartbeat doesn't work this time , but the talk radio does.
