HICan anyone give any advice I have had tinnitus for 7 years but this is the first time I have to have treatment at the dentist using the dentist drill and I'm scared the sound of the drill will make my tinnitus worse but no idea what I can do. As anyone any advice. Thanks

it certainly makes no difference to me, and I’ve seen posts here over the years with the same sort of response.

It could be that, after it’s over and you’ve started to relax at home, your T might ramp up a bit. This is the primitive part of your brain thinking, “oh, I had a noise, it’s gone! I’d better compensate”. But it wears off, perhaps after a few minutes or hours.

Hello,

We are all different, but I have severe reactive T, and quite a lot of dental work over the years, none of which has worsened it at all. My T is always bad when I go in for a procedure (hello double root canal and subsequent double apicectomy), because I am tense. My Dentist is brilliant and I have confidence in him though, so by the time we begin I am just concentrating on doing as I am told and getting on with it. No after effects on my T.

I think it is much the same as the worry we all have going for an MRI for T - which can be a lot louder than any dentist's drill. I found that quite scary first time, but there was no long lasting deterioration.

Best Wishes

I've had tinnitus for 5 years. I've also had several dental treatments (fillings and root canal) during that time and not had any issues. I'm an extremely nervous patient so my stress levels are through the roof every time I go to the dentist even without treatment. I had root canal yesterday. I am fine. So I'm sure you will be too. Good luck 👍

If it does it will only be on a tempoary basis - like a couple of hours. I've been in the dentist's chair a few times since getting T and it has done nothing to improve or make worse.

The dentists drill has never affected my T, but if you are worried take some earplugs and pop those in for the drilling. You’ll be fine.

I got the Bose headphones and wore them during my treatment and it helped to reduce and distract the noise. My dentist space out the drilling to five min or less and rest and then again and it helped

Hi. I always wear foam earplugs whenever I go to the dentist - even when I’m just getting my teeth cleaned! My dentist is used to it now and waits for me to put my plugs in. Good luck.

it never made mine worse. Google dentist with tinnitus and ask?

Find a CbT psychologist who has experienced Tinnitus. I’m in the U.S. and I’m finally getting relief.

At times I seem to spend far too much of my life in the dentist's chair and my tinnitus has never been affected. I don't think using earplugs or headphones will make any difference to the effect or not on tinnitus seeing as tinnitus is all in your head, but it might make you feel more comfortable. I do take off my CI and remove my hearing aid though just because I've always hated drill noise.
