Happy New Year everyone. Just joined this site/group and kinda feeling a little weird. Wondering if I'm the only person in the group from the USA, but we're all humans and I'm guessing we all have Tinnitus to some degree, so we do have something in common if not the same time zone :0)...Just wanted to say hi and hoping maybe to share useful info, encouragement, melt downs (ugh) and also hear about your triumphs and tough days, things that worked/maybe didn't. 6 months in with the head ringing and my life is a bit derailed right now. It'd be nice to know if there are others out the living with Tinnitus too and what helps you all cope the most. Gotta get a grip on this thing.

Mine came from extreme stress from 3 significant bereavements in just 7 weeks. Never known a year like it. But it improved over the months, and the stress reduced. Maybe a connection there. I know this from buying a recording device to capture the sound of bus travel. Used to play it back in bed, and it gave comfort in masking the tinnitus. But I no longer needed it 4 to 5 months in.

Whether it gets quieter or not depends on the cause. Nerve damage doesn't get better, but you adapt and don't notice it as much. Mine started decades ago when I was 17 and took expired antibiotics. Its up to you and your temperament and mental health how much you let the sound distress you. Nowadays, I find it comforting in an odd way, the sound has been with me so long, and my life has changed and flowed around this constant sound.

“getting a Grip”. Hmmm. Yes. But, the aim is to get habituated - so that you don’t notice it. It won’t necessarily go away, but if you don’t notice it then there’s no problem. Getting a grip means you are concentrating on it, and tinnitus loves that you are giving it this attention.

There are so many techniques from deep breathing onwards.

Hi FSM I've had it since 2011 the result of listening to music cranked up too loud for many years. It has increased over the years usually due to a loud noise I was not expecting and was unable to avoid as I am very careful not to antagonise the T. I have always managed to habituate it but has got a bit harder as it increases. It also takes a while to habituate after an increase which can be worrying and makes me anxious. have hot sweats and probably notice it even more. It has just increased this week so I start again trying to ignore it as long as possible and hopefully getting longer periods where it is not noticed. Best wishes
