Hi all

Did your T start off as a low pitched sound and then eventually got louder ?

Hello peach-purls,

There are obviously two components to your question, two variables - pitch and loudness. They can operate independently of each other, and often do. My own T started more than 20 years ago as a hiss, medium in pitch and not very loud. Over these many years it has changed, so that the both pitch and loudness can vary greatly, even in a single day, but, on the whole the usual pitch is higher and the loudness much greater than it was at the beginning.

I have described my own experience, but we are all different. It can be interesting to learn the form that other people's T takes, and how it may have changed over time, but, in my opinion, there is nothing useful to be learned from those stories that might help with the management of one's own T, or predict what form it will take tomorrow - let alone over longer periods.

Kind Regards

hello,

Couldn’t agree more with perlcoder, each of us seem to have a different experience to Tinnitus, from its onset to its maintenance.

Key thing for me was understanding triggers to pitch and volume to limit them as much as possible (loud environment, alcohol, stress, dehydration). Hard to juggle them all on top of work/family but slowly understanding your own cause and effect is what helps me.

Thinking back I think my Tinnitus started way before I noticed it one specific day but back then volume was much lower.

my tinnitus started maybe 30 years ago at a low pitch, now it is so loud in both ears especially at night. I also experience zaps in my head like a short circuit sound. It definitely gets louder if I,m upset . I,m 77 years old now ,keeping myself busy takes my attention away from it.

dont think the zaps are related to T . I get them very very occasionally. Very quick , no pain. no damage, just annoying when you are trying to get to sleep.. Have stopped worrying about them . Google "exploding head syndrome." its nothing to worry about.

Mine started around 10 years ago and was then very sparodic, I would get up at night to look out of the window, because it sounded like there was a lorry parked outside with the engine running. These days it's continuous moderate and now sounds like an aircraft leaving the gate and taxing to the runway. I have some nights where I wake up around three in the morning, sometimes I can get back to sleep sometimes not, another issue is my work involves night callout and if I am woke up I have difficulty getting back to sleep. Which does affect driving late at night, this is a problem I am now having to address. I always find if I am busy at work or with one of my hobbies I do not notice the tinnitus, it's the night time that's uncomfortable.
