I developed tinnitus 2 years ago, which I believe was noise induced. My gp put me on Amitrypline 10mg, and to be honest after a couple of months I never really heard my tinnitus, it didn't bother me at all. However my sleep was still very hit and miss so recently my gp put me on promethazine. I noticed after I'd been on it for about 7 days that I could hear my tinnitus; I took it for about 16 days then I decided to stop taking it, as I read on the side effects that could worsen tinnitus.
I've been off the promethazine for about 3 weeks now, and I would have thought my tinnitus would have quietened down by now but it hasn't. I wondered if anyone else has had a similar experience.
Thanks

There aren't any medications that can directly treat tinnitus, but there are plenty that can make it worse. You have to be really careful to read the safety leaflet and ask lots of questions of your GP.
Amitryptaline is usually prescribed in relation to tinnitus just to keep people's mental state in check. It's an old-fashioned antidepressant, but they prescribe it for all sorts of conditions to take advantage of the side-effects of the drug - they call it prescribing 'off label'.
unfortunately our GPs will prescribe meds that worsen tinnitus as a side effect . Always read the leaflet . My GP gave me Atorvastatin . Leaflet said uncommon side effect 1 in 100 “ may cause tinnitus “. Not my idea of Uncommon . I thought oh well I already have T, which I barely noticed . It DID NOT say may make tinnitus worse . I did a lot of research on line , found the article ,where they knew it could make it worse . Well it did !! I’m gutted . I only took for 5 days , 18 months later I still have the hissing !
