It's mortar and pestle time - Ginkgo update

Holland & Barrett have discontinued 30mg Ginkgo tablets, leaving 60mg and 120mg on the shelf. No more convenience for a 3 x 30mg dose. I tried a 120 but the increase in tinnitus which happens for me on dose day was uncomfortable so I won't be doing that again. It looks like more is not necessarily better with Ginkgo. And not in one go. Better to string it out over the day.

With a bottle of 120mg tablets to use up I invested in a mortar and pestle. And (through Amazon) a small precision electronic scales. Obtained one for around £30. They are cheaper but I wanted one that measures down to 1mg.

The tablets are tough to break up. So nut cracker used. Success from that. To measure out 30mg of Ginkgo you have to take into account the weight of the binding agent used. A 30mg tablet actually weighs 62mg, and it's 62mg of crushed tablet / powder taken, or thereabout.

Goodness i admire your determination to address this, how annoying they have changed the dose - talking of pestle and mortar reminded me of Cadfael, all the best in your endeavours 👍

Thanks, Seabob! I was thinking similar, that there's a bit of the Charles Dickens around with that device in the kitchen.

I wish I'd bought a cast iron mortar with cast iron pestle. Those tablets don't like to be broken up, but will persevere with acquired dense plastic pot and wooden pestle. The nut cracker doing the essential work.

Thank goodness we still can just about retain a sense of humour, just to say i do have a pack of Ginko they are in capsule form so they can be opened up i guess if that was an option for you i would be happy to send them to you..i think i probably took a couple but didnt persevere...they are a good brand, no charge, they are just taking up space in my drawer, the other thing i thought was that you can get Ginko in liquid i think A Vogel do it they are a good brand too 😁

That's a really kind thought, Seabob. What I would like is if someone on this site who is struggling financially who would like to give Ginkgo a try could make themselves known on this thread and you send the stuff to them. That would be wonderful.

Yes, sense of humour essential in this life. I also have 250mg Ginkgo which are headed for grinding down. The suggested on the bottle is 3 of those a day. A whopping 750mg. I've had a problem with 120mg in one go. 750mg would blow my bloody head off!

Still. To get a bit of relief from Ginkgo a day or two later, when I'm away from home and out and about, I'm prepared to put up with a more profound tinnitus on dose day. At least I think I am!
