hello everyone, it’s been a while since I wrote on here. Anyway just reaching out I guess and letting off. After getting T I went down hill very very badly. Had a dear friend who had it severe and destroyed him. I had a whooshing in left ear and it moved to both over a year. Had fitted with ear aids and they are fantastic, used with the app they take mask and help greatly. The T actually went away for a while but came back and I could cope. However the last couple of weeks T has picked up and I took half a Amitriptyline for a couple of nights. I awoke one morning and the T had gone. Took it last night now have a height pitched sound in left ear. Has completely send me do pally and am am getting dark thoughts again. I know we can’t reason with it but without sounding dramatic, as my friend said “T is the destroyer of souls” and he was right.

newbie, it seems to me that you are going through a bad patch just like you did before - and you improved. So you will improve again.
Tinnitus isn’t necessarily a constant, it can come and go. One person whom you know or knew was badly affected by this. As ten percent or so of the population have T, this means that, statistically, the vast majority of us are NOT so affected.
Go back to the British Tinnitus Association website and read how you can help yourself.
Hi Newbie71 I'm sorry you're having a tough time lately. T can fluctuate - as Rosie says - and it's not always easy to manage the changes. Hopefully with the right help and support you'll come to terms with it again. When my T gets very loud as it is just now I take one day at time. We can't reason with T but we can reason with ourselves. I'm so sorry about your friend.
Sorry you are struggling. T comes and goes in terms of how severe it is, in my experience. I have had it for over four years, i have hearing aids which have really helped, and I have a white noise machine for night time.
However, I do take Amitriptyline 20-30 mgs, this is for fibromyalgia as well as some other conditions. It relieves pain and helps me sleep. I took half a tablet initially and slowly over a period of 3 or years have increased.
Medications are often specific to the individual, what works for one doeesn't necessarily work or suit another. If it helped, I wouldn't dismiss it out of hand... sleep is so important and sleep depravation can cause lots of problems.
Best wishes
Hi, sorry to hear you are struggling. I can totally empathize how you feel as I know this is how I felt when I was struggling. However, from my personal experience, from coming a dark place to now living well with my T, plus after talking to many many people who also live well with their T, for me its not a case of 'reasoning with my tinnitus' instead its a case of realizing that by understanding it and the techniques that helps calm our nervous system we can take the power away from our T which makes it benign (just another bodily function). I am not sure what techniques you are using to manage your tinnitus and your nervous system but there are lots of evidence based techniques on the BTA website plus it may be worth attending one of the BTA support groups tinnitus.org.uk/find-a-supp... where it may help you see how others have felt like you but are now living well with their T (I found this so helpful as I not only learnt about the condition, I learnt techniques and also got empathetic support from others who understood how I felt). I wanted to post this to give you hope, as part of understanding the condition and my nervous system I have moved from a dark place to living well with my T (and I have seen many others also take this path). I hope this helps in some small way, stay safe.
