Best headphones & ear plugs for Son having MRI?

My son has suffered from Tinnitus since he was young after numerous ear infections and operation. He is having an MRI next week, this is second attempt as he couldn’t cope first time and it had to be stopped. So I am hoping to find some headphones and earplugs to help him get through it this time. Can anyone recommend any that are going to be more efficient than the ones supplied by the hospital?

Thank you for your help.

Hi tinnitusmum,

If you look through my post ‘Advice on MRI Scan’, you should find some information on decent ear plugs to use.

All the best :)

Thank you. I have read your post and found the advice on ear plugs. Found some on amazon.

Aww. Poor little fella. The problem with headphones - as you may know - is they can't contain any metal parts. So you have to use the ones the hospital provide unless you can find some metal free ones. I 've not found any to date. Hope your son has a better experience next time - one way or another.

Why not try shokz headphones which play sounds from your phone through your cheekbones. They do not cover your ears.

The only problem with Aftershokz is that they don't protect your ears from the noise of the MRI Scanner.

I've also had a look at the Baby Banz ear defenders for younger kids, and it isn't clear whether or not they have any metal parts - they seem like they might be a good option, otherwise.

I think you may have read my response to Molko1972 MRI post but suggest you give them a call before the appointment so see what they have done in the past for other children with T. Also, may be worth asking if the MRI is opened ended as they often have these at children's hospital (e.g. Great Ormond Street Hospital), although this doesn't change the sound of the MRI, it can help on focusing on something other than the noise of the MRI as they have a TV at the open end and you can watch the TV via an angled mirror (and hear it via the headphones they give you) . Hoping it goes well for you and your little one. Stay Safe
