Hopeful but disappointed

I thought I would share the appointment I had on Friday.

I was thinking there and then that it would be sorted but no.

I went in to see an audiologist of some sort and then all he did was syringe which helped as I have small ear canals and he also said about to just carry on with therapy which I have started.

I was like "is that it" as he showed me the door. I was under the assumption it was a full hearing assessment etc. But no. So I asked him about hearing tests and apparently they can't do it on site. So there's another bit of waiting. But apparently a letter for a referral is being sent. I don't know how long this will take but it's frustrating to say the least. I was really annoyed after that even if there's nothing he could have done.

Hopefully they make a case for me having hearing aids. I am sure it will help!

Ah well, Sailorsam, from the replies you got to your earlier post it looks like you’re not alone in being disappointed!

Takes so long doesn't it. I hope you get your heading aids soon and they make a difference.

I just felt like it was pointless doing it tbh. It felt like a waste of time. So I think I may give my GP a ring and explain it. I was vexed for a good two hours after it. It was awful.

Hi Sailorsam2001

I felt very disappointed too. I got a better hearing test at Hearing Clinic company. It included hearing with background noise test and a speech recognition test.

The test is free but then they tried to sell you expensive hearing aids. I didn't go for them as there wasn't a huge difference for me when I tried them and they were very expensive! They felt comfortable and my own voice sounded better but top range cost 5 thousand pounds for a pair!

Anyway my main motivation for going was the detailed tests. I got a print out of my hearing tests and offered to pay for the print-outs but they said it was ok. I learned much more about my hearing and tinnitus there than I did with NHS...maybe worth a try if you have one near, or another private hearing place simply for the tests and discussion? I have sensorineural hearing loss and tinnitus and they explained it very well. All the best

It's really shit tbh. Apologies for my language but it was awful. It was not even a hearing test centre etc so I have to wait probably ages for more results. I just want this to happen as I think it will benefit me massively. It's just a lot of waiting

I am so sorry that you feel let down over your appointment. I know exactly how you feel , you feel like nobody cares or understands and also the long wait doesn’t helpmatters . A year ago when I paid 195 pounds for a private chat with an Ent specialist , he just sat on the edge of his desk and looked like he was ready to run out the door , it felt very degrading and made me feel let down . It’s like we are not important . I know what it feels like .

I think a call to my GP is going to be happening as I felt it was just a normal appointment. It was just ear irrigation as I have small ear canals and a general chit chat about stuff I have heard before.

No worries...take care. Hope you get some help.

So sorry Sailorsam2001 You have my every sympathy. Persevere with your GP. Keep saying what you need. That's what I've had to do. I first contacted my GP in July 2020 and today - 16 months later - I'm going to ENT. You'll get there too .

So sorry to hear this Sam, let's hope your next appointment has better results.

Take Care

Mike

I'd ask if you can see an audiovestibular Doctor ( they are on the NHS) , they specialize in Tinnitus as well as other hearing issues and balance issues. It's a new area of medicine and I don't think it's available in every area yet but worth finding out as they run Tinnitus clinics.

I know about audiovestibular because I'll be going into to medicine and it's the branch of medicine I want to go into after FY training.

Having Tinnitus has made me want to have a career helping those with it and as being a Dr is all I've ever wanted to be audiovestibular is the right choice

Wish I had read this a couple of weeks ago. 25 mins chat paying private (£250). I was hoping a sound I've had for 6 months might be investigated. It stops sometimes when lying down and resting on my back or if I stick finger in ear, the annoying, warbling tune stops??? I believe it started after trying ear pieces out at private clinic. Not sure if it was trying the sound therapy (only 30 mins) but it sounds like the tones I was played to see how sensitive I was to sound!! Trying to do something to help tinnitus backfired for me. Anyway, no such luck with any further investigating. He looked in my ears, told i have small ear canals and all looked fine. Just put on cbt list on nhs. I will look into audiovestibular Clinic. I should add I've had high hissing constant sound for 2 years also.

Not what you're looking for?
