Prochloperazine for Menieres/Anxiety attacks

Hi all

My question is on - Prochlorperazine - just been prescribed a low dose of this (2mg) by my GP - for menieres/vertigo and panic attacks - as betahistine from ENT dept made me feel unwell/caused strange reactions.

I have another ENT appointment for on 26th Aug.

Anyone got experience of prochloperazine? I googled it and looks like you can buy it over counter. Says it can also be used for anxiety which could help with panic atracks I've been having.

Says also can be used for szichophrenia.

Any advice welcome.

I was prescribed proc. for vertigo and found it worked well. When I was at my worst and could barely see or walk straight it got me through, though the effect, during the first week, wore off after only a few hours and it’s DANGEROUS to exceed stated dose. After a week the vertigo gradually stabilised along with the exercises which are, in my view, extremely important. If you don’t know what exercises I mean, reply to this post.

Thanks for your advice. I have balance exercises to do and trying to change the way I react to stress.

I only used it in emergencies as it made me feel pretty awful. Craniosacral therapy is what helped me most, relieving all the tension in my skull. I don't take anything now

Hi there. I came off Betahistine because It did nothing for me at all. One less tablet to take has to be a good thing. All the best from rich.

I also couldn't get on with Betahistine (which made me feel quite unwell and didn't prevent me having another nasty vomiting 'event'. GP said this suggested that my problem was not Menieres. Another GP put me on a high dose of Prochlorperazine to get things under control, and then 5mg 3 times a day. It worked, I almost immediately felt well and I was able to reduce the dose gradually, and then stopped taking it for a month. Unfortunately, symptoms then returned and I've been back on Prochlorperazine 5mg 3 times a day for 10 days, now reducing to twice a day. No noticeable side-effects. Awaiting an Otology consultation.

Thanks for your reply. All the best. Dud your throat feel funny? Day after taking prochlorperazine my throat feels/tastes similar to the feeling you get after a period of being sick...if that makes sense? Take care xx

I think it may have affected my sense of taste for a while – I began to dislike the taste of coffee and good wine didn't taste of much (I know, I'm not supposed to drink, but a glass of red wine is good for the soul). But I seem now to have passed through that stage, and enjoyed a glass today.

Thanks. I'll persevere ...I've to take the tablets occasionally so will try next time things build up. Absolutely, no harm 🍷🙂
