Taking blood pressure tablets

Hi I haven't been on here for a very long time as have been coping very well and managing my tinnitus, however last year I was diagnosed with high blood pressure and put on ramipril 2.5mgs to start with but that wasn't controlling it so docs upped it to 5mgs and that wasn't working so they upped it to 10mgs. On the lower doses my tinnitus was fine but I'm a week in now on higher dose and its definitely made my T louder and so just wanted to ask if anyone else has had a similar problem and did it resolve itself once your body got used to the higher dose or did you have to come off of it. I'm prepared to give it a chance but not if it means my T is going to be louder than I'm used to. Any advice please

Hello Lesley,How annoying for you.

Thanks for sharing this information . I don’t know anything about this but there’s been other people on here concerned about drugs affecting tinnitus. I myself am wondering if the drugs I take could be the culprit of my T . Seems to be like a lot more research needs to be done for tinnitus .

Hi, yes it seems medication has some part to play in some peoples Tinnitus development, High doses of Aspirin are known to induce it but usually when you stop it should go away. However I have to take the hypertensive drugs at the moment so I'm kind of stuck with it but if it continues to get worse or doesn't settle down I shall go back to my GP as if it stays like this it will start to affect my mental health again and thats the last thing I need right now. Hope you sort out your problems with yours.

subject in the medical world.

Why do you think are we told

to “ just get on with it”. Mine

is quite severe. I do my best,

Hello Lesley Been on ramipril for the last 15 years at 10mg a day cant say its made my T any worse, still the same noise level, but stress is definitely a trigger for me so I try to keep as calm and as level headed as possible

Hi David, I have been under a lot of stress too over past 5 weeks. I work in NHS and have been helping ITU out with looking after ventilated covid patients and have wondered if the two combined has made it worse but I've only been on 10mgs for a week and was fine before that and so i m inclined to think its the tablets. I am going to half them for this week and see if it makes any difference and if not then it must be the stress. Luckily I am on leave this week so chance to recharge and relax but I haven't had to deal with my T being this loud for sometime so its come as a bit of a shock. I know I have to ignore it and use sound therapy as that's what worked before and to try and get a good night's sleep as that has been up and down too. I'm hoping its just a blip for now.

Hello LesleyI'm sure it's just a blip as you say, and with your leave coming up your break from work will be a chance to step away from the coal face as it were and to re-adjust and relax which I'm sure will help quieten your T so take that as a positive. Just to end I would like to say working in the NHS as you do I admire you and all your colleagues for the tireless work you do day in day out to keep us all safe through this difficult time with covid, you all deserve a medal

I had an increase of ramipril like you, for bp from 2.5 to 10. The dr just kept increasing but bp didn’t lower. I was diagnosed with T after this. It has never gone away. I asked to come off ramipril and now take 1x Indapamide 2.5mg a day and bp is quite controlled. I’m not saying this is good for you, as we are all different. But I’m stuck with T now and this has been about 4 years ago now. I hope your T improves with time. I find if I’m tired it definitely gets worse.

Hi,Thanks for your reply. Sorry you developed Tinnitus after starting your meds. I've had T for 5 years now brought on by traumatic grief after my mum died and it was awful to start with until I finally came to terms with it and began to ignore it for most of the time so having it spike last week was a shock. I have halved the tabs this week and it has quietened again but I will go back to the 10mgs just to see what happens if it spikes again I will definitely speak to my GP. There are so many different hypertensive drugs on the market so there should be one that will lower my BP yet not cause my T to spike or at least I hope so. Feeling more relaxed too and sleeping better now I'm on leave but it will be back to ITU next week. X

I hope you find the right tablets. I’m sorry to hear about your Mum. T definitely gets worse when you get tired, so try to rest when you can. Take care of yourself xx
