Advice on Tinitus

My husband has just recently developed tinnitus, he has been put on anti depressants, and because of the Covid 19, has never seen a doctor, he has been referred to ENT but I have been informed it might not be till next year when he can get an appointment, the tablets are helping but he has noticed that it seems worse in the mornings. My question is does this happen with tinnitus Thanks

Well Bernie, everyone experiences T in different ways.

What I might say is, your husband’s symptom lessens later in the day and that’s something good to hold on to.

Your husband will start to get used to this horrible sound by early next year, I expect.

I wish him, and you, well.

Hi Bernie, I too have tinnitus- for me I personally think it comes with my autoimmune conditions. I had a hearing test which shows some damage in the higher range but I was also given hearing aids because it can reduce Tinnitus by about 50% apparently.

My tinnitus is bilateral and is quite noisy at times and can be distressing and the hearing aids have definitely made it more manageable.

The other thing I found really useful is a white noise machine at night, just quietly for an hour , I personally have my set on a trickling stream Noise, it distracts me from my own head noise.

I hope this may help. Good luck.

Tinnitus is a condition which does appear to affect some people more noticeably at the start of the day. Dr. James Jackson at Leeds Trinity University has published some BTA-supported research on cortisol - the stress hormone - and how it may impact on people living with tinnitus -

I was at a tinnitus conference when that chap was a speaker speaking about cortisol and later took part in a survey and spoke to him over the phone.I have the utmost respect and admiration for him! He is an honest and true gentlemen that overcame his own problems with hearing and tinnitus too

I was under medicated with levothyroxine for a while there. Now I totally understand the connection with cortisol anxiety and tinnitus through hypothyroidism

Hey Leslie

If it’s just recent and the tablets are helping that’s only a good thing! The T might in the morning could ease. It’s a terrible condition with no real ground rules!

Both of you stay safe and take care!
