High Frequency Hearing Test

Does anyone know where I can get a hearing test done that covers frequencies higher than 8 kHz ? I have tried some of the "online" tests but results are inconsistent. Would somewhere like Boots or Specsavers do such a test ?

I have copies of my tests from both the NHS and Boots and both only go to 8k.

Is there any particular reason why you want to test the higher frequencies?

I'm trying to ascertain how much my hearing has deteriorated since I started suffering with bad tinnitus and Hyperacusis in late February of this year. From the online testing that I've done I cannot hear anything past 10 kHz which worries me as it may well be what's contributing to my current issues. Just trying to find an official source where I can get this tested properly and then maybe get some guidance or advice as to what I can do.

If you haven't tried it already, there is a nifty little app called 'Hearing Test and Ear Age Test' by Yuichi Sakashita if you have a smartphone. (The actual hearing test data from the app was a bit out though compared to my recent NHS test; there again my NHS test was quite different to my Boots test of two years ago).

According to the app, I can't hear past 13,000 kHz which means I have the average frequency range of someone five years older than me, so not too bad.

It might be worth asking an audiologist in Boots whether they can test past 10kHz. Just because they don't test past 10k doesn't mean they can't. Have you been referred to an NHS audiologist yet? Would be a good idea if not. My tinnitus got a lot worse around ten months ago and my hearing test of two weeks ago revealed that I now have developed some mild hearing loss in my good ear in both the low and high frequencies compared to my NHS test eleven years ago when my hearing in that ear was excellent (I am completely deaf in the other ear since childhood so am mega paranoid about losing any hearing in my good ear).

Thanks for the info. Might just go in and ask about test over 8 kHz. See NHS audiologist in October.Sorry about your hearing. Fully appreciate your concern in such a situation. That sucks.

Cheers mate. I am going to be trying out CROS hearing aids and have to wait up to three months for those. Strangely, I feel like everything is too loud rather than not being able to hear well. I avoid loud environments as much as possible and get really stressed with certain sounds which make me wonder if I might share some of your Hyperacusis symptoms. I had an MRI last Sunday which apparently is good standard practice if your Tinnitus is just in one ear (am still awaiting the results but am not expecting anything sinister). Not sure if your tinnitus is in both ears? If it's just in one, definitely push for an MRI.
