Morning Drumcraw, Hows it going today? I've tried to establish the frequency range of my T but to be honest,l I'm struggling. How did you find yours? I downloaded an app and thought It was 3,6kHz but then the T changes tone?

Hello Drumcraw.

I asked the Hearing therapist about volume. My T has without doubt increased greatly in my right ear. She told me that most peoples' T is around 45 to 65 DB. I asked her how they know and she told me that it is partly subjective as they play sounds until the level matches.

Yours at 80 plus must me very loud. A T friend of mine states that his is like standing beside Niagara falls.

I don't think that it can stay constant. If I am in a quiet room the noise goes through roof. I am sure my neighbours can hear it. My whole head becomes consumed by it.

I have a set of tinnitus maskers that I got from the NHS. It is set to a low "Shhhhhh"sound. If I put it in my left ear then it stops the tinnitus in my right ear. It is as if my brain directs itself towards that sound. I have just got to put up with the hyperacusis in that ear.

Back to your point, for me it is not the volume but the intrusiveness. I can put up with the high pitched ringing it my right ear but the hyperaussis in my left drives me mad. We all have our own personal struggles with T. Hope that you get some answers.

All the best.

Ade

It's not something that's generally measured, so I don't think most people know.

From studies that have been done, if a person's tinnitus is XX dB at the start of treatment, and they are successfully treated, the objective volume is still around XX dB - it's just that their reaction to the noise has changed and they aren't bothered by it. It's the same if you live near a busy road - the first few days, it's hellish, and then habituation kicks in. The traffic is still as loud and as busy - but your brain accepts it.

The more you worry though about volume, the type of sound, how long habituation takes - the more intrusive your tinnitus will appear to be.

Best wishes

Nic
