Went back to my GP yesterday to discuss the options to manage my T, apparently I can't be referred until my depression is under control.

i'm now at the end of my tether my T makes my depression worse as any sufferer will understand, I feel completely stuck, so my GP advised I double my anti depressant and go back in two weeks

Hi Carol.

I understand how you must be feeling and it's not the response that you wanted to hear from your GP. However, I do agree with her/him. Once your depression improves, I believe you will be in a better position to undergo any treatment that is offered to you at ENT.

Similarly, when some people first get tinnitus they want to try treatments such as TRT and CBT and have asked my opinion. I usually advise to wait for at least four months preferably six. In the early stages tinnitus can make a person feel like they are riding an emotional rollercoaster. One day up and the next down. The treatments above are long term. A person needs to in be emotionally stable and have a positive outlook otherwise they are not effective.

Give it time

All the best

Michael

PS: If you haven't read my post: positivity and tinnitus, then I advise you to do so.

Phone NHS24 and describe how you're feeling and ask to speak to someone from mental health. They will listen to you and it gives you a chance to voice your feelings.

Or go to A&E. There is a mental health team there. If you can't cope then it's something to try.

Your doctor is only a GP but is trying to help.

The BTA have helplines.

I saw a psychologist who had no training in tinnitus at all, the CPN has none and a GP can only do so much.

I voiced my complaint that there should be some understanding of tinnitus and training to help people.

How are you feeling now Carol....

Are you getting support with depression aswell as medication

.lots of love glynis

Carol, what antidepressants are you on at the moment ? I was prescribed Amitriptyline 20 mgs, these work for some people with Tinnitus therefore just ask your G.P. to prescribe it for you, if he won't then change your G.P. a.s.a.p.
