I have the same problem. My legs itch like crazy around the ankle area. The more I scratch the worse it gets of course. Doesn;t happen every day but every few weeks.

I used to get very itchy legs/shins. I think it was because I was over medicated while my adrenals were struggling. It almost like I had gone from hypo to hyper. I am sure more knowledgeable people will be able to explain better but I do think it is to do with too much meds when your body cant process it.

I've no idea if it is connected (sorry not at all knowledgeable) but...

this time last year I had terrible shin/calf pain (as well as wrist/elbow/rib & various joint pain) and decided to pay for a VitD test which came back 'inadequate' & supplemented and pains eased completely.

BUT just this last few weeks I could scratch the skin off my shins and they hurt again (they are really dry too which is new for me) and now I've got another streaming cold (within 10 days of the last one grr!) and feeling very out of sorts and just want to sleep.... so guess I'll be asking for more tests like iron, B12 etc. GP wouldn't do them last time, but I'll keep trying!

What I was trying to say (inbetween my whingeing) was don't forget to get mineral/vitamins checked. J :D

this type of itchiness is a common symptom of low vitamin B12

I get the itch. I call it my fire ant dance up and down my lower half. It drives me crazy. i can also get the odd itch just above one ankle.

Is your skin dry, thickened?

Common causes of the dreaded itch.

1= cause of the itching is the nerve endings are damaged and mimic itching, wheras they are firing off pain messages.

2= nettle type rash called urticaria/hives

3 = Lichen planus - also common with underactives.

4 = psoriasis

5= Eczema

6= folliculitis - common with underactive thyroid

7= prurigo

8 = Dermatographism

9 = ichthyosis

10 = pruritus - the fire ant itch.

11=Neurodermatitis

12 = Hasimotos

13 = Restless Leg Syndrome

14= Venous Insufficiency

15 - dermatitus

16 - pre tibial myexodema. Linked to thyroid and may be eased with hc cream.

Hi It is probably thyroid related , lots of advice. i would just add make sure it is not diabetes, autoimmune and hormonal. It causes lot of peculiar symptoms and excessive, terrible itchy legs./feet is one of them. You do not need to be fat, I am underweight and was when first had diabetes. Ask for a glucose tolerance blood test and ideally Hb1ac too.
