Celebrities with Thyroid problems....

There are quite a few "celebrities" with thyroid issues and I'm wondering how come they are sailing through without any apparent problems? I'm wondering if it's because they go private? Second question-how do you go about finding a reputable private doc?

Many people do fine on levothyroxine and don't appear to have any problems.

If they don't get well I would be sure they see someone privately.

That's good news. After reading posts from people who are really suffering as they (or their GPs) can't seem to get the balance right it worries me. I'm "putting the cart before the horse" really as I'm not on medication myself yet but am dreading it.

Chances are you'll be fine with levothyroxine so don't worry unless you find it doesn't work. And even then, you will be armed with the knowledge to help you with the right treatment and to make sure you have good levels of all those vitamins and minerals :)

If only one high profile celebrity would step forward and tell the world that they don't get on with levo and take something else instead, we could make hypothyroidism as high-profile as them. I'm sure there must be at least one out there!

Hopefully one of them is reading this right now :-)

Sadly if they are o.k. they will unlikely to be reading this, but getting on with their lives.

That should have read "sadly for us"

What can a private consultant give a wealthy thryroid patient that a less wealthy patient cannot obtain?

I can't answer that I'm afraid except to say that given the choice, I would prefer to be treated privately whatever was wrong with me :-)

He can give you the wrong treatment plus a huge bill.My private medical insurers SImply Health stopped paying my Endo's fee as I had Graves and they told me try classed this as chronic and would never recover. It is a dreadful disease, I think now I may be autoimmune Hypo, I much preferred being Hyper.

It's incredible isn't it? Sofia Vergara, Penny Lancaster, Davina McCall, Kim Cattrall, Gina Lee Nolan, Missy Elliot, Kelly Osbourne. TV presenters Melissa Porter and Kate Garraway, Emmerdale actress Roxanne Pallett, Fitness expert Jillian Michaels and so on...Now I have deliberately listed 'female' celebrities who suffer from Thyroid Disease. And the one thing I fail to understand is how they all look fabulous. I mean I have looked for signs. You know the ones that the rest of us mere mortals suffer from? Straw hair, dry skin, bloated faces, pallor, goiters, staring eyes and weight gain/loss. Nope, I can't find any evidence by 'studying' their appearance. Now, is that because they have all been fortunate with diagnosis and treatment, and tolerate thyroxine fine? OR is it because they have the money to access 'alternative' treatments privately and recover their health that way? Either way, it is a mystery to me. They all appear to be working with energy and a zest for life. While many of us here can hardly get out of bed some days. I want what THEY'RE having.....

Thank you, thank you JoanofArc...that is exactly what I was getting at (only didn't do it quite as articulately!) I am in no way as bad as some people but my hair is thinning, dry as sticks (likewise my skin), I am having mood swings so bad that I make the incredible hulk look even tempered, am constipated etc etc and just generally have lost my sparkle, but all the women you've mentioned don't seem to be suffering at all. It is very strange....

My take on it is that they are taken seriously more quickly and so get diagnosed quicker. Also, they are probably all so much more concerned about their looks - it is their livelihood after all - and so would probably pick up on the smaller changes quicker themselves.

Because of this, all of the symptoms have less time to 'set in'.

A lot of them are also Hyper rather than hypo, so may actually be 'cured' as it were. Although, I am still waiting for someone who was hyper and 'cured' to now turn hypo.....We might get to help them out then! ;-)

Once diagnosed, they can afford to go private straight away and dictate the tests and medications they would like. Don't forget, this is not just private health insurance we are talking about, but actual private doctors who are probably falling over themselves to help a 'celeb'.

Of course, most of the people on this site are anonymous, so there may be some celebs lurking around..! ;-)

You only see what they want you to see. You don't see them when they've just rolled out of bed, before they've got their make-up on, and their hairdressers have had time to dress their hair. Make-up can cover a thousand sins! And, they have the money to buy the clothes that flatter them, whatever their figure.

But, having said that Mick Hucknall looks awful!
