Thyroid side effects. .

Hi everyone well im new 2 this site. Iv just recently been diagnosed with under active thyroid virtually none is what the doctor told me..this was the beginning ov December. They put me on 50 mg levothyroxine. In a few days I was feeling ok and could function as normal.a few weeks into my treatment went to see a specialist and he put me on 100 mg..and then my troubles multiplied, started with massive headaches chest pains and other shooting pains everywhere just very unwell. So went 2 doctors he put me on 75 mg the problems still there but the inteceerty has eased...4 weeks down had my bloods done...the doctor said very under medicated and has put me on 100 mg one day and 75mg the day after...and now every day is a varied day ov been unwell ...is it normal 2 change the meds like that ....????

I've joined on behalf of my husband who has been diagnosed with hypothyroidism. He won't do any research so that's why I'm here. I do know from Rob's meds, that the medical professionals so tend to make you feel as though you are in an experiment. Rob's on 75 mg up from the initial 50 mg and has been told before Christmas to up to 100 mg which he has done to no effect. I find it really difficult to help because I know it is a case of trying to find the correct dose through what is basically trial and error. I'm been on the net today trying to seek out the worst case scenario for not taking the meds which is what Rob is thinking of doing (don't worry - I won't let him). I just want to say, keep at it even if it seems a frustrating waste of time. We've been trying to sort Rob's dose for months and it does not seem to be working at all. He's getting increasingly concerned about the continued weight gain and is certainly exhibiting most of the symptoms I've found on the Thyroid website. He is getting angry and fed up and it can be really difficult to deal with - so, please keep trying, don't give up and good luck.

Hi mackey, well, not to my mind it isn't. All that swapping and changing has put a lot of strain on your already strained body.

You don't say how old you are but, according to your age, 25 or 50 is the starting dose. (And I think you'll find that's mcg, not mg.) One should then wait 6 weeks (some say 4 but I think 6 is better) to let your body get used to it, then a test, and then a small increase of 25, wait another 6 weeks and so on until you reach the dose where you no-longer have any symptoms. This can take quite a long time, but it's worth taking that time to get it right..

Your 'specialist' increased your dose by twice as much as he should have done, and your doctor, after reducing the dose, didn't wait long enough before putting it up again. I dare say you were under-medicated but one has to increase the dose slowly if one wants to avoid stressing the body.

Perhaps go back to 75 and wait 6 weeks to let things settle? Just my opinion, I'm not medically trained.

Thanks for the feed back...And its good to no im not alone in this horrible condition I thought it was just me..because I no a couple ov people who have the same problems and they were fine straight away on the meds..IM at the doctors on Tuesday and il suggest staying on the 100(mcg) cos I think been beter on them..symptoms are constantly changing tho.ive even thought about coming off the meds myself. I felt better without them.but im gona persivia and hope things improve soon.. thanks

Hi mackey, get a metabolic test done. You may not be converting, you may just be intolerant to the T4 : I take it you are on T4? Get your adrenals checked --- NHS don't do adrenals really and in the main, the cortisol blood test will come back normal anyway. Google Dr Wilson - his site is all about the adrenals, there are several tests you can do at home, as a last resort get a saliva test done. This will have to be private. Thyroid should NOT be treated without first checking the adrenals are very healthy, they should still have support BREFORE going on thyroid meds and continue to be supported whilst taking thyroid meds. If your consultant/GP gets upperty advise them to look at the video from the Scottish Parliament Petition Meeting --- Effective Thyroid and Adrenal Care : Explains everything beautifully.

Hi Mackey.. I also am newly diagnosed in october 2012 .. I have loads of pains throught my body and bruising to .. I must say i feel a lot worse and even more symptoms since i started meds .. I started on 100mcg then after 2nd bloods was put up to 125 mcg.. I kept thinking i am going to stop taking my meds , until i read on the web sites how dangeres it is to stop them , so thats a big no no lol ... I hope you feel a bit better soon and take care they are all telling us on here it will get better so hang on in there x

perhaps your body is taking a while to get used to working faster. Your body/organs will be out of shape due to being hypothyroid and so taking upping your metabolism so quickly might cause them to struggle a bit till your body gets back in shape. Perhaps they should up them more gradually to allow your body to adjust more slowly even though that means you will still be hypo for a bit longer?

My first blood test showed I was hypo however after a repeat test 6 weeks later, GP said it was normal. A year later I went back had another test showed hypo and was prescribed 25 mcg - had a test 6 weeks later then med increased to 50 mcg. Went to GP after feeling unwell (about 6 months later) and med increased to 75. It has gradually been increased and my current dose is alternate 125 and 100 mcg but this has taken 6 years to get here. I'm not 100% at the moment and will be going back next week to ask for an increase. Since last Thursday when I joined this forum I've started to take my med at night instead of the morning. very tired today but have been okay at w/e. I have had periods of feeling very well.

Please bear with it - slowly but surely you'll get there.

Iv been back to the doctor and he..asked me what do I think we should do?????? Now iv got 2 decide whether to carry on with the 100mcg one day and 75mcg the next day..witch was making me v unwell... or stay on 75 mcg for longer. .and maybe throw in 100 mcg once or twice a week is what the doctor suggested depending on how I feel. ...confusion is not the right word at min...can anyone advice please
