Thyroid and Menopause symptoms
i have read somewhere (cant remember where now) that menopausal symptoms are very similar to thyroid and that any woman of menopausal age should be checked for thyroid problems>
Hi Winterose
I went through the menopause 6 years ago at the age of 47, I visited my doctor several times during a year long period for various reasons ie. depression, headaches, hair loss, weight gain, extreme tiredness - only to be told it was due to the menopause & gave me leaflets & booklets on the menopause.
Then we had a new doctor start at our surgery, he took one look at me & said I might be suffering with under-active thyroid & sent me for a blood test, he was correct. If I had not seen that particular doctor I hate to think how things might have turned out !

Hi Winterose. I wasted 2 yrs with all my symptoms being blamed on menapausal stuff, was put on HRT which made me worse and I blew up like a balloon and stopped it after 6 wks. When I finally managed to get to see an Endo, when I arrived I realised that my GP had sent me to the Gynae Endo!! Who after discussing my symptoms said they were all highly suggestive of thyroid issues and not to pms, depression or menapause - and he could do no more for me as I would have to see a general endo!
Still it did eliminate things and he was very clear in the letter back to my arrogant - now ex - GP, who ended up putting me onto a trial of thyroxine!
Actually the Endo said that I would really be post menapausal as when I had my hysterectomy 4 yrs ago and my periods stopped, that was it. And my bloods showed that I was exactly where I should be for that.

Hi - yes when women start in peri menopause ( 39 upwards!) their estrogen hits the thyroid receptors and thyroid hormone cannot get in to cell to be used. Dr Lee's book is excellent on this - and progesterone (natural and not wild yam) really helps this too - I do feel better using this, but is not the magic bullet.
