daughter update

I posted about my daughter a few weeks ago and thought I’d update the lovely people who offered advice.

Last night we saw an amazing private endocrinologist who listened and did not judge. He looked at tests and agreed something is not right. He said she had the start of Hashimoto disease but felt if he started treatment it would be sticking a sticky plaster on without resolving the issue. We came away very happy. He prescribed 50000 units of vitD in a hope of kickstarting thyroid also lots of tests for liver, insulin resistance inflamation and of cause thyroid and several other blood test to be done in 6 weeks and we will see him again in 7 weeks. It’s the most hopeful she has felt for ages.

a month ago you said her vitamin D was at good level

healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...

Why would she need such a massive dose of vitamin D

Or is it a daily dose - eg 5000iu daily for 3 months

Has she had coeliac blood test done

BEFORE trial on gluten free diet

A month ago it was 65 but she was still taking 4000 units a day. He wants her to get it as high as possible. First doctor I’ve ever heard of encouraging this

I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but vit D is not going to 'kickstart' her thyroid. Nothing is. She has Hashi's and her thyroid has been damaged. Thyroids do not regenerate. With Hashi's all you can do is stick a sticking plaster on it by taking thyroid hormone replacement. There is no treatment for the autoimmune aspect and no cure.

According to her last blood test, although her FT3 is mid-range, her FT4 is very low. This suggests a failing thyroid. A sick thyroid tends to concentrate on making T3 rather than T4, to keep you going, but it cannot keep that up forever. So, the sooner she starts on thyroid hormone replacement the better, to avoid worse symptoms further down the line.

Sorry, but I believe in telling it as it is, so that you're not disappointed when his 'treatment' doesn't work. Did he also tell her to take magnesium and vit K2-MK7 with the vit D? It won't do much for her if she doesn't.

You haven’t burst my bubble, I was just pleased he listened. He did say it would probably mean taking T4 but we were pleased he is checking everything else as he said she may have other areas unbalanced that also need addressing. What he meant about a sticker plaster was other imbalances being missed by assuming it was just the thyroid and only treating that. She had a hysterectomy and ovary removal 2 years ago and although on HRT she may also need more. Only 6 weeks to get results. First doctor that listened and thankfully she has BUPA

Well, that's OK, then. :) But her other hormones are bound to be unbalanced as she has low thyroid hormones. They all work together. But they usually sort themselves out once the thyroid hormones are optimal.

The half life of vit d is short so need to take it everyday. It is dosed according to weight, needs a good level of magnesium before introducing vit d, the add vit k a few weeks or so later. Make sure the vitd is in an oil capsule and even then should be taken with a high fat meal. Often best taken in the morning as it can be energixing.

thank you, he has given her 50,000 units tablets and to take one a week, she is already on 4000 with k2 a day so will have to stop those and takes magnesium at night ( not sure what dose). We were just happy he is checking and getting a baseline before a decision on what to do. Our expectation was to feel we had wasted his time.
