New Hashimotos's

Hello,

I was recently diagnosed Hashimoto's in October, TSH was 144 at the time and antibodies >2000. Currently on a dose of 75mcg with recent TSH at beginning of the month being 3.58. The consultant would like it to be <2 so should my dose have been increased as GP wanting to keep it at 75mcg? Also any advice for new diagnosis would be great.

Welcome aboard, you need to push for that increase, do you always test before 9am, fasted with last dose of levo 24 hours before?

Yeah last bloods were done before 9am and I always take my levo around 7.30am so was more than 24 hours. I have a telephone review 25th of this month so going to ask then about the increase

Welcome to the forum SummerDog

So we can offer better advice, can you tell us more about your thyroid condition, eg ongoing symptoms, plus blood test results (with ranges in brackets) for:

FT3

FT4

(in addition to TSH provided)

Plus any key vitamin tests (ferritin, folate, vitamins D and B12)

If your GP is unable to complete all the above (eg if TSH is within range, some surgeries may not be able to access FT4 and FT3 tests), you could look to do this privately, as many forum members do, for a better picture of your thyroid health:

thyroiduk.org/help-and-supp...

Likely you will need a further increase in Levo to get TSH below 2. Most members here report feeling best when this drops closer to/ under 1.

Which brand of Levo is your 75mcg

Have you had coeliac blood test done at diagnosis

While still eating high gluten diet ask GP for coeliac blood test first as per NICE Guidelines

nice.org.uk/guidance/ng20/c...

Important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

What vitamin supplements are you taking

A Helpful Quote from another members GP ,on what to expect when starting treatment for hypothyroidism.

"The way my new GP described it was ..."You know how your body is continually breaking down and rebuilding itself? Well, the thyroid controls the rebuilding, so if it isn't working you carry on breaking down but don't rebuild properly. Your body now has a lot of catching up to do, which will take a minimum of 12 months, probably a lot longer...." or words to that effect. He also said it would be a saw tooth recovery (get better, go backwards a bit, get better, go backwards a bit) and he's been right so far."
