I have had Thyroid issues for nigh on 20 years and probably undiagnosed for a lot longer until I came across a famous BioHacking person who advocated the merits of the supplementTMG . In summary it deals with inflammation issues in the Liver.

I trialled TMG 6 months ago and it literally changed my life within 48 hours.

I refused Thyroid meds after suffering horrid side effects and have not taken any conventional prescribed meds for 14 years. Obviously there are some risks to making that choice but I can honestly say taking TMG has been a life changing for me and taking me down a path of researching more about functional medicine.

Each to their own but I feel this is the way forward when trying to resolve unremitting health issues.

Have you got some more information about TMG?

Google comes up with this...

TMG (trimethylglycine) is an amino acid found in beetroot and leafy greens 1. It is used as a treatment for classical homocystinuria 2. Research suggests that TMG may have additional health benefits, including anti-inflammatory and antioxidative properties 3. TMG supplements are thought to support liver health, cellular reproduction, and metabolism of the amino acid homocysteine 4.

Not sure how it would replace thyroid hormones??

Trimethylglycine

Also known as betaine?

A particluar brand's blurb tells me this:

'Trimethylglycine (TMG) supplement, specifically formulated to enhance liver function, support detoxification, and help maintain normal homocysteine levels. TMG is a powerful amino acid recognized for its essential role in promoting cardiovascular health and optimizing liver performance.

I see glycine is in my total amino supplement what dose trimethyl bring to the party?

Methyl! TMG acts as a methyl donor. Three methyls to each glycine.

Whether you need it, how such things interacts with the many methylation genetic variants, etc., I simply do not know.

Beneficial Effects of Betaine: A Comprehensive Review

Simple Summary

A large number of studies report that medicinal herbs and many food ingredients protect against the development of liver disease because they possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, or anti-necrotic activities. This review focuses on the biological and beneficial effects of dietary betaine (trimethylglycine), a naturally occurring and crucial methyl donor, that restores methionine homeostasis in cells. We describe recent studies on betaine’s mechanism(s) of action as a therapeutic agent for improving indices of alcohol-induced and metabolic- associated liver disease. Due to its low cost, high tolerability, and efficacy, we suggest betaine as a promising therapeutic for clinical use to treat these aforementioned diseases as well as other liver-/non-liver-related diseases and conditions.

Note in particular that it is expressly said to be low cost. Then consider the prices of any sources of TMG supplements you might find.

'Not sure how it would replace thyroid hormones??'

It won't! And it won't magically revive a dead thyroid either.

Of course not but if the problem is putting a strain on the Throid, it needs exploring.

So exactly what 'problem' did you have that 'put a strain' on your thyroid?

sunshinegirl2612, It would be helpful if you actually gave more information about your original thyroid diagnosis, including lab test results, (TSH, FT4, FT3, antibodies).

Seemingly not been on thyroid hormone for 8 years??

Without knowing details of original diagnosis, this means nothing :)

I assume you are referring to this person:

Biohacker extraordinaire, Tim Gray (who is currently 44 but claims his latest biological age test came back as 21)...

I have to say, I am never convinced by such claims.

Biohacking is a considerable money-making industry. Which doesn't mean everything is untrue or wrong. But does imply that extreme caution is required to ensure that claims are verifiable, that advice is safe and good, and that you do not get ripped off.

Ah, thanks 🍄I've now lost interest and am off for a row 🚣‍♀️

'I have to say, I am never convinced by such claims.'

I really hope no-one else here is either. Ditching thyroid hormone replacement in favour of this or similar so called magic bullets is categorically dangerous.

We've seen a number of members in one way or another stop taking thyroid hormones. And suffer.

Sometimes doctors stop prescribing or refuse to prescribe a suitable form and dose. But at other times the person has felt the thyroid hormone was not helping so they stopped taking it.

Yet it is likely every single case could have been avoided if the best decisions had been made by everyone involved.

I'm always reminded of the old joke, stopping smoking, drinking and eating what you like wont make you live for ever, but it will certainly feel like it.

I wasn’t advocating anything like what I’ve had to do. Read up on Homocysteine levels and how they affect you. Especially regarding liver function.

As it happens, I’ve recently self referred myself for full body MRI, my GP took comprehensive blood tests, had XRay and due an abdominal ultra sound as a sort of full MOT to see where I’m at for my age( 60) . MRI results 100% positive. Blood Pressure down from 200+ to 130 / 90. Chest X Ray for lungs and heart.. normal so the path I’ve been following has had some positive impact.

I reiterate, it’s very important to be careful when taking your health care into your own hands but I had no option as Thyroxine did not work for me.

It would sound like you were misdiagnosed in the first place?

How were you getting on before the TMG? And what are the healthy protocols you use? Have you cut out gluten etc? At what stage in your diagnosis did you start making any lifestyle changes?

Not what you're looking for?
