Hunger in a hashi crash

Hello, Sometimes when I’m having a bad hashimotos flare I find i’m desperately hungry as an attempt to get more energy I guess. But I’m wondering whether eating more at this time actually makes it worseas its i’m using energy to digest the food.

Had anyone else found this & with what results? Thanks

So, what do you actually mean by 'Hashi's flare'?

What most people mean is that they have a sudden swing to temporary 'hyperthyroidism' as the dying cells in the thyroid release their stock of hormone into the blood.

In that case, it would be understandable that you feel more hungry because your metabolosim will be greatly increased.

But, you are writing as if you mean the opposite, and feeling more hypo, in which case it's not a Hashi's flare in the usualy sense of that term.

But, in any case, if you feel more hungry, it's probably because you need more nutrients. When did you last have vit D, vit B12, folate and ferritin tested?

Personally, I believe in giving your body what its asking for. Your body knows what it needs and I really don't think energy used for digestion is in any way relevant. Just eat. Make sure it's wholesome, nutrititious food, though. The last thing you need when hypo is to starve yourself. Could just be that your body is asking for more calories to use for conversion of T4 to T3. Just indulge it. :)

Thankyou, thats helpful. I kind of felt the same, but wasn’t sure& wanted to check. My usual symptom of ‘crashing’ being bad fatigue, which makes sense with the calories ☺️.

I find that this happens to me from time to time. It usually coincides with having done something ‘different’. For example the extremely unusual incidence of ‘socialising’. This means messing around with my diet perhaps - attempting to avoid gluten when eating out PLUS not having appropriate calories. Never mind the over excitement factor in seeing friends and having a bit of fun.

Even one episode of not eating properly can have me prowling the fridge and larder for a couple of days until I realise what is going on! My body really needs proper feeding and when I make up for the lost nutrients it settles back to normal hunger levels.

As usual we need to learn to trust our bodies but this is actually much more difficult, especially for women brought up in times when there is a media frenzy about dieting. The body needs what the body needs.

Thankyou. Its nuts isn’t it- the hunger levels! So really it can be that specific for some people. Hard work. I’m still getting to know my triggers. But when I do go out occaisionally I take my own food & stick to that regardless of anything or anyone else & work round my energy levels, it takes lots of planning 🥵
