Diet and cycling - hyperthyroidism and prediabetes

Hi and thanks for any thoughts. I have recently been diagnosed as prediabetic with increased cholesterol. I tried cutting back on carbs but am a keen cyclist and felt a loss of energy and stamina. Further tests done and awaiting others but hyperthyroidism likely. My weight is going down and I would welcome any advice on diet and cycling pending test results. Apologies, early days I know but hard to know what is best to eat and how much I should try and cycle as normal!

Welcome to the forum Cherrybloss

So we can offer better advice, can you tell us more about any ongoing symptoms (other than loss of energy/ stamina mentioned), plus blood test results (with ranges in brackets) for:

TSH

FT3

FT4

Plus any antibody and key vitamin tests (ferritin, folate, vitamins D and B12)

If your GP is unable to complete all the above (eg if TSH is within range, some surgeries may not be able to access FT4 and FT3 tests), you could look to do this privately, as many forum members do, for a better picture of your thyroid health:

Until you have the thyroid blood test results, I would cut back on cycling/ intense exercise, as your body may need time to rest/ recover. Try more gentle exercise and don’t overdo it. I would try to eat healthily but not have a restrictive diet in the meantime.

Loss of energy/ stamina/ weight gain are often linked with ‘hypothyroidism’’, an under active thyroid, whereas ‘hyperthyroidism’ is an over active thyroid condition. However, many symptoms do overlap, that’s why it’s important to have comprehensive thyroid blood tests.

Thanks for this. My TSH is 0.35, full results awaited. Prediabetes score is 43 and other blood test results awaited . Cholesterol 5.8.

Do add ranges in brackets after results (as these can vary between laboratories).

Hi, so my updated thyroid test is 0.31 but T3 and 4 are within normal ranges quite healthily. My weight is still dropping but I have reduced my carbs a bit.

I am new and have been on Synthyroid since 1989. Starting at 1.50 and was at that dose until 2007 when it was lowered to 1.12. I was told I had pre-diabetes in 2017. You mention weight and I am losing weight for two years now to the point where my muscles are wasting away with one leg now being bigger than the other. I have been a mile walker for the past 24 years. Before that I was a mile swimmer. So really been keeping fit for 35 of my 73 years. I don't know if the weight loss is related to the pre-diabetes or something else. I also have elevated cholesterol. My muscle enzymes are elevated at 94 when the normal is 40. I believe the weight I'm losing is muscle. Last night I noticed how Boney my knees looked and I felt scared Of the muscle loss. My question is: Could this be from the Ore-diabetes? My doctor doesn't take pre-diabetes seriously and says I shouldn't be having any symptoms. He won't send me for brain scan to rule out other diseases like MS. I also suffer vertigo where I can't walk during the attacks and have problems with balance. I saw an ear specialist last year and he said my ears are fine. I'm 73 with so many issues including Fibro and Ra as well. So, I can barely walk from arthritis.
