I'm afraid that your T4 being 0.15 means nothing on its own.

We need the range, the reference interval. Ranges vary by lab and by what units the results are measured in.

It usually helps if you tell us which country you are in - and also add that to your profile so we can see it in future.

I'm afraid you are going to have to ask the clinic or lab!

However, this link (below) might help if it was done by a major lab.

Reference ranges used by NZ laboratories

For the reference ranges for thyroid function tests published by the major test laboratories in New Zealand, click (page may take a while to load):

But are you sure that is a T4 test (Free T4 - FT4)? That number would be extremely LOW for any T4 test. Could it be a TSH test result?

Yes absolutely sure helvella

welcome to the forum

Are you based in U.K. or elsewhere?

Autoimmune HYPOthyroid frequently starts with transient hyperthyroid results and symptoms

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 tested

Testing TSI or Trab thyroid antibodies to see if have genuine HYPERthyroid - called Graves’ disease

Also need both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested at least once to see if you might have autoimmune hypothyroidism also called Hashimoto’s

TPO /TG can be mildly raised with Graves’ disease too

Very important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 with any thyroid issues

Recommended that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am, only drink water between waking and test

So you need to ask for copies of results and ranges

Here in U.K. you’re legally entitled to copies

Not sure about situation in NZ

We do have other NZ members

Also check that folate and ferritin levels been tested

Low vitamin levels extremely common with thyroid disease

you need thyroid levels tested 6-8 weeks after any change in medication

ALWAYS test early morning

TSH, Ft4, Ft3

and thyroid antibodies tested at least once

We see small, but steady number of early stage Hashimoto’s patients initially misdiagnosed as having Graves’ disease

Check if you have actually had TSI or Trab antibodies tested to definitely confirm Graves’ disease

I'm not at all surprised you are confused.

If you have a multinodular goitre that is producing thyroid hormone, you could be Hyperthyroid from that. But that would not mean you have Graves.

Graves is caused by TRab (TSH Receptor antibodies) and without having tested for them, it would be wrong to diagnose Graves. Being hyperthyroid alone does NOT diagnose Graves.

Was the B12 shot a one-off? Or part of a planned series of loading doses? Do they plan for you to have regular shots (every 4 to 12 weeks)?

I Asked for it myself as I was falling asleep with exhaustion..I also was diagnosed with severe anxiety which is correct but I feel like a mental patient rather than someone who is just plain unwell..I have an awesome doctor who is leaving..drat

Hi Coulby, I was diagnosed with overactive thyroid and Graves about 5 years ago. I was started on carbimazole and struggled with aching joints etc at first. The overactivity also causes many symptoms including anxiety which makes everything seem worse.

My advice is to stick with the carbimazole as prescribed. It takes a few weeks to start kicking in and to reduce your thyroid levels. Once it does you will feel more like your normal self. Then your carbimazole dose will be reduced, which will also reduce/stop the side effects.

Be patient, carbimazole works, it just takes time. You will feel normal again. Unlike lots of people on here I don’t study or follow my blood results. I just take the tablets as instructed and lead a normal life. You will get there. Best of luck.
