Anyone had their female hormones tested and understand the results?

I tested my hormones due to feeling perimenopausal. Does anyone know how to decipher all of this. I did it during my luteal phase and in the morning. I have hadhimotos.

👋 I am no PCOS expect but your prolactin looks like your Hashimoto’s isn’t being treated effectively, which can make PCOS worse.

I thought it was very high myself. I haven't been diagnosed with pcos. Seems like high prolactin can indicate many things.

Your FSH : LH ratio seems to reflect you are not peri. What are your thyroid labs like? I am much better at understanding those.

I did get my thyroid levels plus b12, iron and vit d tested but the test was void because of a clot in the test tube. Retesting again.

Agree with the comments about your prolactin. My prolactin is sky-high... only found out as a result of doing private tests off the back of a Hashimoto's diagnosis (although I haven't done anything about it, yet).

The attached image shows the associated info. about prolactin, provided with my Medichecks results. It definitely does seem to be linked to untreated/poorly treated hypothyroidism!

Re: perimenopause... hormone testing is a notoriously unreliable method of understanding menopause status, mainly because hormones fluctuate so much in general, irrespective of how close you are or are not to the menopause. It's best to go off your symptoms - IF they can be disentangled from any thyroid and/or other conditions symptoms. Sorry - I realise that doesn't help a lot with your original enquiry!

I really hope it isn't a pituitary tumour. I think I have several symptoms having read them. I'm on 175mg of levo per day which I know is a higher dose. I'm waiting on private thyroid bloods because my GP would only do TSH which showed as being low.

I agree - I posted primarily to list the possible symptoms of too much prolactin rather than suggesting tumours.

Prolactin does rise alongside TSH. And even gets released from the pituitary in the same pulsatile fashion - synchronised with TSH.

But I do not have any real idea how long it takes prolactin to drop when thyroid issues are addressed and TSH drops.

I've been on 175mg for about 4 years and my TSH is usually around 0-1 so surely I shouldn't be having an issue with prolactin unless I have a conversion problem I guess. The doc seems to think Im overmedicated based on my TSH alone. I posted about this recently. It's all very frustrating because if she had tested a wider range of levels I wouldn't be trying to second guess things.

Regarding elated prolactin, it all works on negative feedback systems.

The hypothalamus senses low circulating levels of thyroid hormone and secretes TRH (thyroid-releasing-hormone to encourage TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) to encourage more thyroid hormones. Prolactin is made in the pituitary gland and further encouragement from the hypothalamus might increase higher levels of prolactin as well as TSH. Basically, hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism can be related to both low and high levels of prolactin.

Another control of prolactin are dopamine levels which hypothyroidism can influence (T3 can be thought as a neurotransmitter), and also some drugs such as BP tablets with calcium channel blockers.

Agree with ERIC107 that sex hormones results can be an unreliable measure of hormones whilst changes are taking place and will be further influenced by thyroid hormones and your elevated prolactin. If this were me I would concentrate on getting thyroid hormones working better and assessing meds - dose, type, whether essential supports are in place such as iron, etc, and your menstrual irregularities might right themselves or at least offer a clearer view of peri-menopause status.

Re high prolactin, there can be other causes of high prolactin so I would be careful about assuming it’s thyroid, it might be thyroid though, if it was me I would maybe check with a good Endo , I know hard to find. I’m male , thyroid fine, high prolactin, allegedly can be due to the TRT I am on. I’ve studied it bit and my current view is it can be a bit complicated, hopefully not in your case.
