Hi everyone, I had a total thyroidectomy at the weekend following a suspicious thyroid nodule result. Any advice & tips are very welcome, I have just started on Levothyroxine 100mg. Many thanks

Welcome to the group. I hope you're making a good recovery.

It's recommended to always get the same brand of Levothyroxine at every presciption. Many find that different brands are not interchangeable. You can get your GP to write the brand name in the first line of the prescription to ensure you aren't given any other brand.

What brand do you currently have?

Do you have copies of blood results from before your thyroidectomy?

Always take Levo on an empty stomach an hour away from food or caffeine containing drinks & other meds. Many people find taking it at bedtime works well for them.

When we are on Levo & now you have become hypo you may have issues with absorption of vitamins from your food. This is due to low stomach acid. For thyroid hormone to work well we need OPTIMAL levels of vitamins. Have you recently or could you ask your GP to test levels of ferritin, folate, B12 & D3? Private tests are available, see link for companies offering private blood tests & discount codes, some offer a blood draw service at an extra cost. thyroiduk.org/help-and-supp...

There is also a new company offering walk in & mail order blood tests in London, Surrey, Sussex, Kent areas. No charge for blood draw in clinic. Check to see if there is a blood test company near you. onedaytests.com/products/ul...

Only do private postal testing early Monday or Tuesday morning.

Recommended blood test protocol: Test at 9am (or as close as possible), fasting, last levo dose 24hrs before the blood draw, last T3 dose 8-12 hours before blood draw & no biotin containing supplements for 3-7 days (Biotin can interfere with thyroid blood results as it is used in the testing process)? Testing like this gives consistency in your results and will show stable blood levels of hormone and highest TSH which varies throughout the day. Taking Levo/T3 just prior to blood draw can show a falsely elevated result and your GP/Endo might change your dose incorrectly as a result.

named brand prescription

Hello SUZ117,I had a total thyroidectomy last June for graves disease. I would say take it steady and be kind to yourself, plenty of rest.I have kept my profile upto date if you care to take a look.It is a bit long,.but you could skip to the thyroidectomy bit in the middle. I documented how I was getting on every week or so.Just trying to get my medication right at the moment, but I'll get there. No regrets,I feel alot better.Wishing you all the best.
