I noticed my friend with a growing lump under her chin annd she said she has been diagnosed with an extra Thyroid glands. The whole shebang in each gland; one about 1-2 inches above the normal one in the throat.
I have tried googling to get more information but nothing coming up to date.
She said her readings were within range (UK).
If anybody could point me towards some information on this or even better, share any information re cause/how to treat etc based on experience. Thanks.

The thyroid gland has 2 lobes joined by a bridge, when thyroid grows or it’s referred to as extra or additional thyroid tissue but it not considered as another or separate gland, which is likely why your research isn’t coming up with any information.
It sounds as of the thyroid could have nodules, or it might be the thyroid is swollen which is know a goitre. Function is not always affected or not at a stage considered necessary to treat.
Goitre and nodules are common with thyroid autoimmune but can occur without. I have a large nodule which is hyper functions & this is not autoimmune.
Usually the swelling are low down in the neck nearer collar bone downward swelling / growth behind & down collarbone can occur but upwards swelling is extremely unusual.
Sometimes function is within rangebut function can decline slowly. Was TSH, FT4 & FT3 tested & Have thyroid antibodies been tested.
Thank you so much for the information. helvella just reminded me that she had said it was ectopic. It is quite far up, under the chin in fact. A bit of a pest as hopefully it may retract as stealthily as it appeared but it is tantalising to work out why it happens.
