Morcan, Starting on levothyroxine made me feel very ill. I started on 12.5 mcg and slowly increased from that still feeling ill - aching, nausea, couldn't sleep, couldn't eat, anxiety and panic attacks. My consultant told me to take another 12.5mcg daily but to take it at a different time from my original dose. So I took a dose morning and bedtime. I trusted the doctor. We slowly increased the doses until I was on 50mcg and 50mcg per day. But I still felt unwell but the dr said I was fine because my TSH was at the top of its range around 4.75 and my ft4 was over halfway through its range. I was kept like this for years.

Indeed I blamed the levothyroxine for all my problems and all but weaned myself off it. I felt great. Finally though the lack of hormones caught up with me and I became very ill. My TSH was in the 50s and my ft4 and ft3 below their ranges. I obviously had needed the levothyroxine.

In desperation I found this site and began to learn about the thyroid. I now know that it is often the case that people feel ill when they start out on T4 medication. This is because when you start taking the tablets your TSH starts to drop and your struggling thyroid produces less T4 - however the amount of a starter dose is not enough to replace what the thyroid has stopped producing so you feel worse. This is why we need to increase after 6 - 8 weeks on the starter dose.

I also found out that when you are on T4 tablets your TSH should be around 2 and ft4 well up over half way through its range. So my TSH of 4.75 was telling me I needed increased doses of T4.

Having learned about the thyroid from this site I was able to be proactive in getting better treatment. 4 years on I am much better. I still can't do all I want to but I do have a life which I hadn't had for many years.

Hi morcan54

I'm so sorry you are suffering more from your medication.

I've only been on compounded natural dessicated thyroid for five weeks but I was nauseous in the early part (was also nauseas before starting NDT) but now not experiencing the daily sick feeling.

Is there some way you try compounded thyroid medication?
