hi I finally heard back from my gp and the Endo has prescribed 20mg carbimazole daily. My concerns was yesterday I started this and if I’m remembering correctly I was sneezing before I even took the tablet with a tickle nose but has anyone had common cold symptoms blocked and runny nose and watery eyes while taking the drug?
cold with overactive thyroid : hi I finally heard... - Thyroid UK
cold with overactive thyroid
I took 20mg carbimazole for a month then after some blood tests got a letter from my endo telling me to increase to 40mg a day because the 20mg hadn’t really made much difference.
It’s very important that you read the patient information leaflet that should come with your pills - if by any chance you haven’t got one then Google and you will find one online. There are things that you need to look out for a sore throat being (I think) the main one.
I had a bit of a bit of a sore throat not long after I started, I contacted my GP and had a WBC blood test. Everything was fine.
Next time I had a sore throat I spoke with the GP and we decided on a ‘wait and see’ approach. I’ve got a feeling it would have been a massive sore throat rather than what I had but read you definitely need to read the link above. I don’t remember hav8ng cold symptoms though - just the sore throat.

Has GP actually confirmed Graves’ disease by testing TSI or Trab antibodies
Have you got copies of blood test results yet?
Ring GP surgery on Monday and get copies of results
TSH, Ft4 and Ft3
What time of day was test done
Essential to get vitamin levels tested, especially with Crohns too
Vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12
What vitamin supplements are you currently taking
Request GP run blood tests for vitamin levels and also cholesterol
generally
High cholesterol = hypothyroid
Low cholesterol = hyperthyroid
Testing thyroid antibodies
TSI or Trab antibodies for autoimmune HYPERthyroid
TPO and TG thyroid antibodies for autoimmune HYPOthyroid - also called Hashimoto’s
Hashimoto’s frequently starts with transient hyperthyroid results and symptoms before becoming increasingly hypothyroid
It’s not true hyperthyroidism. It’s caused by cells in your thyroid breaking down and releasing excess thyroid hormones
Often mistaken for Graves’ disease if all antibodies not tested
