Hi all, just wanted to see if anyone else has been diagnosed with high blood sugars and had Gp label as diabrtes type 2? I have cut down on carbs though GP said not to restrict too low. Have also been swimming regularly and upped my step count. Obviously need to watch sugary snacks including fruit high in sugar. Hoping next test shows an improvement but concerned in case I need Metformin medication. Anyone else have experience of this?

Diabetes diagnosis after having Hashimotos since 1995
Diagnosed type 2 last november. Been hypothyroid for 30 years. Have you checked your vitb12 and vit d as im now deficient in b and have insufficiency of d. Am on metformin for type 2.
Hi Sandiij, I have vit D checked regularly after hyperparathyroidism and parathyroidectomy. Getting tests on Friday for TFT, Hbca1, vit D, B12, folate, iron, calcium after I asked GP to add a few onto my form. Thank you. Do you find Metformin helps? X
Metformin stopped the symptons i was having. They were insatiable thirst and increased peeing. My hbac1 wqa 130.
I have insatiable thirst and hunger most days and am up two or three times in the night peeing so I am tempted to agree to taking metformin. I am exhausted! Tying not to eat and drinking loads of water instead! Think I will need medication!
Many functional doctors recommend berberine and likened it to metformin. And there are other supplements like gymnema sylvestre which in some way stabilize blood sugar.
Heloise, have you tried any of those?
Sorry for not seeing your note. Yes, I took berberine several times and felt it was very helpful. I did a number of things and really believe apple cider vinegar was huge. Insulin resistance is a big problem and the fermented acv blocks starch, adds probiotics and many other benefits. There are some combination supplements that contain similar herbs like gymna, or bitter melon that do work. I also believe in enzymes. I've posted about some of the recommendations. There are many side issues with Hashimoto's even when thyroid hormones are optimal especially if it all began with menopause. I like adaptogens that help with the nervous system. It does take some study and I have learned from many functional naturopaths online. There's lots of information out there to help in figuring out symptoms.
Toxins are also an issue usually because the liver is overwhelmed. NAC and alpha lipoic acid are also some standbys.
I suffer from hypothyroidism since birth and I’ve been taking Metformin since 1999 with absolutely no adverse effects. The endocrinologist started me on a low dose and slowly raised it to 850 mg 2 x day. I need B12 too.
thanks so much Rosymogs, I feel a tad better for the kind replies from you and Sanjiid
please can I ask if any of you had tingling tongue with fluctuations in blood sugars?
thank you, I walk every and have been teetotal for years. I just need to stick to a low carb
I’ve had an extreme dry mouth and growing thirst since January. Lots of weird skin symptoms and UTIs, plus limb pains, accumulating. When I eat sugar I get headaches.
So I’ve been told by my GP to get tested this week.
Good luck!
What criteria do GPs use when diagnosing you as diabetic? What tests did they run?
My HBA1C IFC standardised level was 28 (20-41 being normal) in January and DCCT aligned was 4.7% (normal 4-5.9%), so if my levels are off now then something pretty dramatic has happened.
lets hope you find out soon, keep us posted. Did you get vitamin D and iron tested?
Yes. I’m consistently iron deficient. Ferritin 12 on the last test but one. In the most recent one it was up a bit but taking iron gave me lots of gut issues. 1 step forward, 1 back.
Vit D normal when last (home) tested but I can’t remember the number exactly.
What is the significance of these for diabetes?
routine blood tests, Hbac1 I think it's called which measures blood sugars. I have had horrendous headaches over the past two months. Have started a low carb diet again! Hoping symptoms improve. And hope you can get some answers. GP was young and didn't seem to know much! Frustrating given its been ages since I saw GP face to face!
Are you on HRT?
As I was listening to Liz Earle's latest podcast today and they were saying women have a 30% higher rate of Diabetes when there hormones reduce as the lack of estrogen effects the way insulin behaves! Take a listen...
hi, yes I am on hrt, hoping GP doesn't stop my oestrogel! Had to complete a questionare recently and am awaiting the outcome. Need to ask for script tomorrow!
thank you so much, I will listen to this. I asked for an appointment with a menopause consultant months ago because I suspected a link have to call at Christmas to see if I can have an appointment, huge backlogs after Covid. Really appreciate your help
So I have read that not sleeping can contribute to high blood sugars. I am unable to sleep for long at night partly due to pain in the back of my neck. Saw young male GP, he just listened and kept saying that we'd need blood test results...that's not going to help with chronic neck pain though just want to be able to sleep properly . I am a light sleeper and still have to ask hubby to come to bed around midnight -1 am to avoid being woken. Last night it was 12.45, and I go past my natural going to sleep time and then lie awake for hours. Student daughter has woken me after putting a light on (she was moving around outside our bedroom). I feel so desperate for a good uninterrupted sleep whilst restarting low carbs and increasing exercise. So frustrating?
