SSRIs and thyroid

Firstly thankyou for everyone who replied to yesterdays post. It really gave me hope. Im awaiting my test kit from Thriva for my thyroid and I am going to order one for a vitamin check.

Due to my severe anxiety im under a mental health nurse who rang me this morning for a chat. I didnt mention thyroid disorders as she wouldnt have a clue about any of it. Obviously my anxiety is still stuck in fight or flight mode and ive been on SSRIs for nearly 10yrs but it was increased a few weeks ago when my anxiety went into overdrive and my thyroid went haywire. She has suggested increasing the dose yet again as obviously its not working.

After yesterdays chats with you all I am convinced that having vast amounts of omeprazole pumped in me from 2 hospital visits it messed my thyroid levels up . Its too much of a coincidence I feel.

Anyway I said to the mental health nurse I would consider upping my SSRIs. My worry is that until I have got my latest thyroid test done am I just adding fuel to the fire by taking a higher dose of SSRIs.

Im so scared that it will mess my thyroid up even further . I will look up info on what they do to the thyroid .

Has anyone else taken SSRIs and had normal thyroid results.

Im going to hold back before I start a higher dose until ive done a thyroid test just in case but I cant cope much longer with constant anxiety.

Thanks for reading.

There are two specialist consultants who can prescribe T3 for patients

1) endocrinologist….unsurprisingly

2) psychiatrist. Low Ft3 is strongly linked to depression unresponsive or unresolved on antidepressants

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articl...

psychiatrictimes.com/view/m...

Obviously as you are someone who’s currently only on levothyroxine (Ft4) lower Ft3 levels are more likely

Suggest you ask your MH nurse for referral to psychiatrist to discuss Liothyronine

Ok thankyou. She is only young, ive not met her but sounds young on phone so hoping she will understand what im on about. I asked her if citalopram interferes with levothyroxine and she said no!! Does'nt instill me with confidence as I had a look on sites and it does affect thyroid absorbtion.

Thankyou again for replying, my health is totally taking a battering from all this.

Are you taking levothyroxine well away from Citalopram

Take one waking and the other at bedtime

I used to when I was on a low dose for years but since this bout of anxiety and gastritis the nurse said take it at lunch time so its about 6 hrs between them .
