Advice needed - thyroid function test while having a cold.

Hi

My daughter is due a repeat thyroid function test but currently has a cold.

Will a cold change her results? Should I wait until she is better? Thanks.

Yes it could change her results and if it’s not an urgent test you could delay it, but how old is she and is there an appointment coming up at which test results are needed. Some endos disregard test results taken when poorly

Thank you for your reply. She is 9 years old, started levothyroxine 5weeks ago, this test is to see how she’s doing needed to be repeated 4-6weeks after, and will have appointment afterwards.

Any acute infection will affect thyroid test results, best to cancel and wait a few extra weeks until she is well over it. Don't be fobbed off if the surgery says it doesn't matter - it does.

Suggest she rebooks

Always book early morning appointment, ideally around 9am and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

What vitamin supplements is she taking?

thank you for your reply. She doesn’t take any supplements, haven’t been advised too.

she should have thyroid antibodies tested for autoimmune thyroid disease

Vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 levels checked annually

Low vitamin levels are common with hypothyroidism
