Mavericks, your time has come!

There is an amusing article in today's Sunday Times regarding possible cures for dementia and where they may come from. It hints that "a guy working in his back room" is needed to counteract the unsuccessful groupthink multimillion dollar cost of the standard medically and professionally educated multiperson efforts. For this a Longitude Prize has been promoted, this being originated in the maverick work of Harrison, the 18th century inventor of timepieces that would be accurate at sea. Well, I thought, now here's a maverick working from a desk in Ilkley, West Yorkshire. But I don't think I'll get near the prize -too many Maskelynes (look him up as an opponent of Harrison). But at least someone knows that groupthink can usually be wrong in complicated situations eg the thyroid. I came to and was educated in science to become a very idealistic young man. I thought that having good ideas overrode exactly where they came from. A lowly University say in Malawi should have the same attention as in Harvard, if the new idea was right and well described. That notion has been thoroughly debunked, but in many ways I still haven't grown up - it's much more satisfying being independent than another nonentity in a group of nonentities.

Had I seen the article, I too would have thought of a maverick working from a desk in Ilkley. :-)

I think many will be reminded of Barry J. Marshall and J. Robin Warren and Helicobacter pylori (thought not entirely outside medicine).

The microneedle levothyroxine delivery paper I posted the other day came from Baghdad. Not a tiny place. But not the first place I'd think of regarding such technology.

There have also been some interesting papers from Iran. Another place we can ignore all too easily.

Never grow up!! 🤔

Trite undoutedly, but, "Growing old is mandatory; growing up is optional" is nevertheless a favourite quote!

When I started investigating T3 as a possible solution to my rapidly failing health I said to my then GP, " Now, I'm taking a maverick approach". She was lovely, but had no idea what was dragging life out of me!

I still have a copy of the notes I gave her at the time, which included my intention to go "off-piste".

She looked at me with the eyes of old age and convention and said, "Oh! You can't do that".

Well I did, and it worked!

As a child I said I was going to be like Peter Pan....and at age 77 I'm still wondering what being grown up feels like!!

Hail thyroid mavericks...and especially diogenes "working in his back room"!

Do you still see that GP? How does she feel about you going off-piste now?

Sorry, I should have added the answer to that....

No, she left the practice just as I was starting to add T3 to my T4 so she didn't see the result. It took around 2 years to get close to a therapeutic dose of T3-only.

The new GP was not impressed by my off-piste approach....she thought I was going to kill myself. But, I stuck with it and occasionally told her what I was doing ....and why.

She eventually accepted that she wasn't going to change my mind so now leaves me to it.. She realises I have improved ...and survived!

I refer to Patient Autonomy... another GP told me that I have this right!

We now have a good relationship, I think she has perhaps learned a little....she is also hypothyroid! . I continue to self medicate without the safety net of the NHS, which is totally rediculous....but the only way I can function. The endo I asked to see was useless.

I suspect this GP still has doubts but she no longer says so! I have given her a letter saying that I take full responsibility for the decision in case it reflects on her in the future.

So much for, "First do no harm"!

I went off-piste in 2011 with respect to my depression treatment, and in 2013 with respect to iron, B12, thyroid and cortisol. I've never regretted it, despite the mistakes I've made on occasion.
