I just saw today my doctor and asked her why I can not continue my treatment with carbimazol(I feel good but just have big goiter)

She insisted that taking carbimazol for life is not posible, that I will have the complications with heart because of it.

Is it true?

(I was taking 5mg ,now she wants me to take 15 mg and in 3 weeks make RAI)

Please ,tell me what do you think.

Thank you for your opinion.

I know someone who has been on Carbimazole for many, many years and it's done no harm.

RAI is the easy option for endos, they zap your thyroid and discharge you. You become hypothyroid and need treatment for that which they say is easy to treat and fine for your GP to treat, you only have to read the posts on here to know how many people are mis-treated for their hypothyroidism and can't get their GPs to prescribe enough to give them optimal health.

At the end of the day the decision is yours, they can't insist that you have RAI. Read, research and make up your own mind.

carbimazole doesn't cause heart problems.... ( it has other risks , but not that ) but your fT3 is currently over range on 5mcg .

and an over range fT3 might well cause heart issues in the long term.

TS H < 0,014 (0,4-4,5)

T4 1,75 (0,85-1,8)

FT3 5,35 (2,5 -4,4)

why not agree to a small increase in carbimalzole . (just enough to get fT3 into range) ,but say you want to postpone your decision about RAI / long term carbimazole for ? 6 months so you have time to understand the implications of these options .

you wrote " And my goiter is growing inside so you understand all consequences and complicity of the operation"

do you mean it's growing downwards and towards your heart etc ?

is this why your doctor means by saying ' heart complications' ?

if so ,i think that change's the risks , and may limit your options .

But you must not allow them to rush you into this important decision.... and waiting another 6 months or so probably isn't going to make much difference to the risks involved , is it ?

Hi,ttattybogle!

Answering your questions about my goiter-it does not growing towards my heart( at least not for the moment).

My doctor was using this argument to convince me to do RAI, she was just saying about the harm of Carbimazole long term and how good and harmless is RAI.

Looks like they do not care about the consequences of this procedure ,not even explaining anything, pretending that it just nothing important ((

Thank you for your advice.

Don’t be rushed into making a decision. I was pushed into RAI being told I would just be swapping one pill for another “if I became hypo” - Carbimazole to Levothyroxine. If I knew then what I know now, I would never have let them destroy my thyroid. I haven’t been well since. Keep your options open.
