Discolouration on tonghe
Dear Pen1966,
my 'gut' feeling is to have this 'Checked Out'.... yes it Could be due to you taking Extra Iron, especially if you are taking it Orally, but 'Something' about this looks Odd/ Strange to me.
Maybe a 'Check' with your 'own' Team, or your GP, just to Be Safe? Can you let me/ us Know please?

I guess just worried no thyroid taken out 32 years ago
Do you smoke? Do you drink red wine? I used to do both those things and my tongue looked like yours. I had to stop both for some time before the black colour went away.
I haven't come across anyone claiming that iron causes the black colour before, but it might be true, I just don't know.
Don't smile vape and don't drink at all have been taking oral iron drops
Have you checked the patient information leaflet that came with the iron drops? Getting a black tongue might be a known side effect.
Nothing on there

One thing that crops up in any discussion of black tongue is dry mouth, and I've had that for years. Whether it relates to the problem I had I don't know. It may just be a coincidence, but I'll never know - my tongue looks fairly normal now.
I had similar a couple of months ago during prolonged antibiotics and it was due to the meds. It disappeared itself. However get someone at the surgery to check out to reassure you. Best Wishes.
My tongue went all sorts of funny shades (including black) and felt ‘coated’ when I started taking Teva. I also had a metallic taste. It went away when I changed brands and started on liquid thyroxine.
Could it be a fungal infection? I had something similar after taking antibiotics for many weeks. Nystatin did the trick to get rid of it.
Use a tooth brush and see if it will scrape off. Medications, smoking, drinking a lot of coffee or tea, and poor oral hygiene can cause this. Overgrowth of bacteria that normally are present on the tongue. This, too, can be caused by the killing of some bacteria with antibiotics so other bacteria overgrow. But the most common cause of discoloration of the tongue is the overgrowth of a fungus. <<<< Found this online.
