Before considering booking any consultation, especially if private we always recommend getting FULL thyroid and vitamin testing done BEFORE consultation
Have you had TSI or Trab antibodies tested to confirm autoimmune hyperthyroid disease, also called Graves’ disease
Important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 levels too
I’ve only just been diagnosed. I’m going to get a copy of the blood test results tomorrow (I hope).I don’t believe the TSI and Trab were tested.
I’ll have to double check the vitamins tomorrow.
I’ve been told I have been referred to the NHS endo, but no one can tell me how long that will be.
Do you know where I could get a full thyroid and vitamin test done?
This is a massive learning curve for me, I know next to nothing about this condition.
First thing is you will need to get hold of copies of test results from GP
You are legally entitled to printed copies of your blood test results and ranges.
The best way to get access to current and historic blood test results is to register for online access to your medical record and blood test results
UK GP practices are supposed to offer everyone online access for blood test results. Ring and ask if this is available and apply to do so if possible, if it is you may need "enhanced access" to see blood results.

In reality many GP surgeries do not have blood test results online yet
Alternatively just speak to receptionist and request printed copies of results. Allow couple of days and then go and pick up.
Important to see exactly what has been tested and equally important what hasn’t been tested yet
For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 tested. Ideally thyroid test should be done in morning
plus testing thyroid antibodies
both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested for Hashimoto’s. That’s autoimmune hypothyroid disease.
Hashimoto’s frequently starts with transient hyperthyroid results and symptoms and can be mistaken for Graves’ disease
But TPO or TG thyroid antibodies can be slightly raised with Graves’ disease too
Very important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 at least once year minimum
Low vitamin levels are extremely common, especially with autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto’s or Ord’s thyroiditis) or hyperthyroid Graves’ disease
Autoimmune thyroid disease with goitre is Hashimoto’s
Autoimmune thyroid disease without goitre is Ord’s
thyroiditis.
Both are autoimmune and generally called Hashimoto’s.
In U.K. medics hardly ever refer to autoimmune thyroid disease as Hashimoto’s (or Ord’s thyroiditis)
Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally before 9am
This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)
Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins

So TPO antibodies are negative
You also need TG antibodies tested for autoimmune hypothyroid thyroid disease. But would need to test privately. NHS only tests TG antibodies if TPO are high.

TSI or Trab Antibodies tested to definitely confirm Graves’ disease, autoimmune hyperthyroid
Hi what’s the difference between Graves’ disease and thyrotoxicosis?
'Thyrotoxicosis' is the state of 'having far too much thyroid hormone' ( from whatever cause ,either TRab antibodies ( Graves Disease) stimulating the thyroid , or a 'Hot' /Toxic nodule secreting too much T4/T3 independently of the thyroid, or whatever other cause of very high T4/T3 levels ...
'Graves Disease' .. is the name of the autoimmune disease in which TRab antibodies cause the thyroid to make too much T4/T3 (Thyrotoxicosis)
Hello Taryn and welcome to the forum :
I found the most well rounded of all the websites and books I purchased was that of the Elaine Moore Graves Disease Foundation website which is dedicated to all Graves patients, their loved ones and families. elaine-moore.com
Graves does appear to be a poorly understood and badly treated Auto Immune disease and back in 2005 when I was diagnosed I had no idea about anything and simply trusted and followed what was expected of me from the medical mainstream.
There are 2 thyroid AI diseases that start off in the same way and why it is essential that the over range and positive antibodies are identified as the treatment for Hashimoto's is not the same as the treatment for Graves.
Please rest and try and turn your brain off - I know this can be difficult, as when just diagnosed you are likely in a state of shock, which can just add to the symptoms being experienced.
fT4 36.7 [10.5 -21] This is high .
fT3 12.4 [3.5-6.5] This is high .
TSH <0.03 [0.35 -5.5] ... this is 'so low the machine can't measure it'
So, your results say , you have too high levels of fT4 and fT3 (the thyroid hormones which are causing your hyperthyroid symptoms)
And a too low TSH ( thyroid stimulating hormone ).. this is a signal from the pituitary to the thyroid asking it to make more or less thyroid hormones ... yours is turned down low to nearly 0 ,because you have too much T4/T3 .. so it's asking your thyroid to stop making so much T4/T3 .
Thyroid Peroxidase antibody <28 [ 0-60] this is 'negative' ('normal') as it is lower than 28 ,( if it was more than 60 it would be positive)
So , they have already checked your TPOab ( Thyroid Peroxidase antibody ) and this is negative.. usually it but not always this is positive in autoimmune HypOthyroidism , but it can sometimes be positive in some cases of Graves HypErthyroidism .
There is a note on your results that says "results may be consistent with hyperthyroidism .FreeT3 and Thyroid Peroxidase and Thyroid Stimulating Immunoglobulins added"
'Thyroid Stimulting Immunoglobulins ' (TSI ) is the name of the test for the specific antibodies that cause Graves Hyperthyroidism ( they make the thyroid produce too much T4/T3) .. it seems they have already asked for it to be tested to confirm if the cause of your high T4/ T3 results is Graves ( autoimmune) Hyperthyroidism .. However i can't see a TSI result on these results you have posted ... it may be being done separately and the result will turn up later, or you may have to have another blood test to get this done .. often it is endocrinologists who order this blood test .
