Very crazy dreams lately. Could reduced dosage be a factor?

So on Tuesday night I went asleep around 10pm. I must have dropped off shortly after. However I woke up sharpish after a dream that felt like reality. I had a headrush as well as aching. When my dosage lowered 13 days ago. I started to have real deep sleep, nothing would disturb me at all. Now the last few nights I have basically gone sleep and kept waking up due to very erratic dreams. Perhaps its my body adjusting to the lowered dose I am not sure. Still have the off balance feeling. Although when I wake up in the mornings it isn't there but then comes on after a while.

Have a good Easter everyone

I think I've been hypothyroid since before I even went to school.

I was first prescribed levothyroxine in my early 50s.

During my 20s and my 30s I went through years of having dreadful, and fairly repetitive nightmares.

Eventually the nightmares stopped during my late 30s and my 40s but only because I actually stopped dreaming altogether.

I only started dreaming again after I took over my own thyroid treatment and took T3 because my level was low. I still remember the very first dream I had after about 15 years absence. And although there was a slight hint of menace to the dream I was really pleased about it because a) I actually remembered it and b) I became aware part way through the dream that I was dreaming and so there was nothing to be frightened about.

Since starting T3 I have even had some funny dreams, which is amazing and often puts me in a really good mood for the day.

Edit: I should have said... Yes, low thyroid hormone levels can severely impact dreaming and nightmares.

Yes it just came out of the blue really. Like I say prior to that on april 2nd I started a lower dosage of 100mcg down from 125mcg on Drs and hospitals request. I then slept very deeply almost coma like. Then this week these really reallistic dreams occured. Hopefully settles down

Do you mean suppressed tsh or being on not enough thyroid hormone replacement IE undermedicated can prevent dreaming or cause it ?

I was referring to low levels of T3 as being a probable cause of no dreaming. But I'm just going by my personal experiences of dreaming throughout my life, I'm not going by other people's research. I know I feel mentally better when I do have varied dreams. The years that I had only nightmares followed by years of no dreams at all were not particularly happy ones for me and depression/anxiety were a big problem. And these problems went away when I started taking T3. And nightmares are now a very rare issue for me.

So is dreaming a positive thing then? A sign of being well medicated?

I assumed dreams meant you were not getting deep slow wave sleep, especially if you remember them. I've been having lots of dreams taking Ndt and now t3. I was getting concerned!

I don't know what the official stance on dreaming is, but I feel more rested and less anxious and depressed when I dream.

I think dreaming is normal for everyone, so if it is normal then not having dreams is abnormal in my opinion - but I've never researched dreams so don't take my word for it.

I think I can guess what would happen if I told a doctor that I didn't dream. They'd just tell me that I must be dreaming, I just don't remember it. But I really don't believe that.

Jelley93,

Thyroid hormone changes have effected my sleep and dreaming too. Before diagnosis I had weird dreams and once somebody shouted really loud in my ear waking me instantly. It felt so real and totally freaked me out.

When I introduced T3 to Levo I literally didn't dream for a year. Now thyroid hormones have been mostly settled for several years my dreaming is back to normal but thats only when I actually manage to sleep! 🤣

"thats only when I actually manage to sleep! " Yeah, I know what you mean. I have presumed that I do dream, but can't remember them. I haven't been concerned about it..........I figured that it is one less thing that might disturb any sleep that I do get. Maybe my thinking has been wrong.

nellie237,

Yeh, you are right. They say we always dream. It's whether we remember them or not.

When I said I literally didn't dream I meant I just didn't remember them anymore .... or maybe they did actually stop! 🤷‍♀️😁. I would like a dream like The Wizard Of Oz.

Funny you should mention dreams jelly because since playing around with my dosage amounts and introducing a bedtime one, mine have such clarity to them and they’re weird but realistic - if that’s not a contradiction. I have always dreamt though

Interestingly I’d presumed the change was because I’ve been sleeping better due to being more optimally dosed. I now fall off more quickly, don’t wake so much during the night and sleep later. All good you might think but no, my recent labs show Ft3 is 60% through the range , Ft4 is below range and TSH virtually non -existent. Disappointing but I also feel vindicated because if I’m honest I knew something wasn’t right as my weight has been creeping up and abdomen is rather large

I was going to post my results over the next day or two for opinions on what might be happening because I just don’t understand why TSH is so low when Ft4 is under range and Ft3 can hardly be considered spectacularly good or high

I know only a fraction of what the experts here do, but I'm not clear why you're worried about a low TSH. My (limited) understanding is that TSH is the pituitary hormone which notices when there's not enough active thyroid hormone (T3 ) in body and instructs body to convert available T4 into T3. So if your T3 is fine, no need for TSH to go into action, and should be low.

I don't know what you're actually taking but if it contains T3 it will "suppress" TSH.

I'm not sure what - if any - implications there are if your T3 is good but T4 is low. I've been curious about that myself as I see the same results, taking NDT Thyroid-S.

Thank you healthkiwi, I’ve posted separately as I’m conscious of hijacking jellie’s post

Not worried as such about low TSH because I’ve read many times that endos and GPs are unnecessarily concerned about it. My concern is that GP will automatically want me to reduce my glandulars when actually, they need increasing. Glandulars are different to NDT in that they contain thyroid hormones but cannot be declared because OTC status will be rescinded thus making it available by prescription only

Regarding Ft4 and Ft3 status the implications are different for everyone but for me it might mean I need Ft4 higher to attain my óptimal and possibly my Ft3 higher too. This may result eventually in some weigh-loss. The only way to know for sure is to achieve either/or of those statuses and if I continue to feel well but lose a few pounds I’ll know I’m at my optimal level, irrespective of what dratted labs tell me

Just a bit of useless most likely information 😁I often recall my dreams to surprise of others and there maybe a connection with B6 just something I stumbled upon.

Have a good Easter too 🐣

Hi Jelley93 , I find I am dreaming a lot since I increased my T3. I seem to go over my past a lot while dreaming. Back with ex partners 😩. 😭

I don't sleep much or dream on 125 mg. When we cut the levo back to 100 my TSH goes to 16 but I sleep and dream like a baby; Definate yes with the weird, far out dreams.....like hanging out with my deceased siblings. It is always the feeling of being "okay" and "home with family" never anything nightmarish or scary.
