Hi all,
Just that really!
Does anyone know if there is a link between Hypothyroidism and ADHD, please?
Hi all,
Just that really!
Does anyone know if there is a link between Hypothyroidism and ADHD, please?
There are many papers which discuss this. A search on PubMed found 216 papers!
It appears that some of them are suggesting that it isn't low thyroid hormone levels in themselves that might cause ADHD. Rather that another factor, such as endocrine disrupting chemicals, are involved in both ADHD and hypothyroidism.
Not for one minute expecting you to digest 216 papers , but so you can look if you wish.
For now, I think we have to take it that many suspect a link, there is some evidence pointing to a link, but its precise details are not fully understood.

I'm very late to respond but thank you! I knew there would be a source for all the papers people reference but I didn't quite know where it was!
Have saved it now for future reference.
My Vade Mecum document has lots of links and, specifically for PubMed, it says:
An index of a large proportion of scientific and medical papers. Includes papers going back to at least the 19th century. Provides the data to Europe PMC.
The PubMed User Guide, which includes introductory topics, is here:
PubMed Central is a repository of a vast collection of full-text papers. If the copyright allows, papers will be added here. Sometimes there is an embargo period, six months or a year from original publication, during which papers will only be available on the publishers’ sites.
In many cases, this holds the only accessible copy of older papers – which, for some papers/journals, go back into the early 19th century.

The term vade mecum means:
1. A referential book such as a handbook or manual.
2. A useful object, constantly carried on one’s person.
Please don't get put off by the number of pages!
Not everything is in this one document - my major medicines document is still separate!

There is a definite connection, in my experience. I thought I had read several articles about hypothyroidism/Hashimoto’s having an effect on the prefrontal cortex but wasn’t able to find anything easily just now in doing a quick search on it. In my experience, my ADD/EFD and other cognitive issues worsened significantly alongside worsening of other symptoms of hypothyroidism after several years on t4 monotherapy. It could be that the prefrontal cortex is affected along with other parts of the brain by whatever mechanism causes brain fog in hypo patients. I believe there’s some thought this may be caused by a lack of sufficient T3 locally in brain tissue, at least to some significant extent.
Yes, my own experience is that my OCD all but disappeared once I got my levels to a decent point.
Have also realised that the ADHD tendancies I have are significantly reduced now too!
