Hi am looking for some help. Am based in Glasgow but willing to travel. My Daughter is 15 am really wanting to get her thyroid checked by a Doctor who is willing to look at all her levels and would appreciate any recommendation for a clinic. I suffer from under active and so does my Mum I am under a private hormone consultant who established this after a unsuccessful appointment and refusal from a top consultant in the spire Edinburgh years ago he wouldn’t even take my blood. My daughter is falling asleep in her classes in school losing hair and gained a lot of weight in the past 12 months with no changes to her diet or exercise. Thankyou in advance Joanna

Has your daughter had her thyroid checked with her GP?

You can get a private thyroid panel with Blue Horizon, they are the only company who will test under 18s. It might be best to do this before paying to see a private consultant. For a full picture it would be worth doing the thyroid plus vitamins bundle - Thyroid Premium Gold test. Details and discount code here :

If you really want to see a private consultant at this stage can she not see yours?

Hi Susie Thankyou so much for that. Unfortunately our GP I asked 3 years ago about this and they never ran the right bloods and will only do the T4 I am going to get in touch with this company for her bloods and then go from there I really appreciate your help

Presumably you have autoimmune thyroid disease (hashimoto’s)

For full Thyroid evaluation your daughter need TSH, FT4 and FT3 plus both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested.

Very important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 too

Low vitamin levels are extremely common, especially with autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto’s or Ord’s thyroiditis)

Hairloss is frequently linked to low iron/ferritin

Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and before eating or drinking anything other than water

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins

Blue Horizon Thyroid Premium Gold includes antibodies, cortisol and vitamins

Blue Horizon will test under 18’s

Suggest paying extra for private blood draw rather than DIY finger prick test

If TPO or TG thyroid antibodies are high this is usually due to Hashimoto’s (commonly known in UK as autoimmune thyroid disease). Ord’s is autoimmune without goitre.

About 90% of all primary hypothyroidism in Uk is due to Hashimoto’s. Low vitamin levels are particularly common with Hashimoto’s. Gluten intolerance is often a hidden issue too

Your daughter's hair loss and weight gain could be caused by very low iron and/or ferritin (iron stores).

One Glaswegian found her way to good health when she consulted Dr. Gordon Skinner who also consulted in Glasgow as well as Birmingham. She had reached a point in her life when she was contemplating suicide.

Unfortunately for hypo patients Dr Skinner died. Since his death his staff have been colating all of their 'research' and hope to publish and they've stated the medical profession will be shaken re dysfunctional thyroid glands.

Lorraine Cleaver was also assisted by Thyroiduk.org.uk when she put her case before Glasgow's parliament. She now has a Facebook page and she may be able to advise if there's a knowledgeable doctor in the Glasgow area.
