Blurry vision linked to hypothyroidism?

Hi everyone,

Anyone suffering from blurred vision?

I'm going to eye doc. asap, but I wondered if it's due to fatigue and stress and/ or is it one more of the multitude of other hypo symptoms that pop up?

As always, very grateful for all answers.

I get blurred vision due to dry eye problems, particularly when I first wake up. When I was younger my eyes kept themselves clean. Now they don't due to lack of tears. The way I deal with this is to use an eye wash product I get from Boots to clean my eyes, then I lubricate my eyes with Hycosan Extra eye drops.

Your problems may be caused by something entirely different, so my solution may be wrong for you.

thanks, humanbean. Well I hope it's just a little lubrification needed in the old machinery, lol! Slowly I'm feeling like my body's falling apart

Many conditions & even stress can cause blurred vision, so definitely see an optician ASAP and they will refer you to an ophthalmologist if needed . I have thyroid eye disease & an epiretinal membrane and it’s the retina problem that causes some blurriness/ distortion, whereas the TED causes dryness & swelling (for me).

what do you do for it?

My Blurriness is intermittent, so I avoid driving/ screen time when acute.

For overall eye health I take lutein & zeazanthin daily (eye complex 7 Amazon) and for TED I take selenium and use preservative free eye drops liberally (HycoSan or Hyloforte are both great). I am photo sensitive, so wear reactive prescription glasses/ sunglasses.

Combination medication (ie addition of T3 to Levo) has helped reduce eye inflammation.

Re epiretinal membrane, mine is currently not severe enough to operate, so just monitored by ophthalmologist. Definitely worth having an ‘upgraded’ eye test; think it costs £14-15 more than standard eye test at Specsaver. It was this scan in my local opticians that picked up the retina problem & my optician referred me to specialist retina ophthalmologist. My TED was diagnosed by my endo, who referred me to TED specialist ophthalmologist.

Kalispera!Sorry, only just read your profile that you are in Greece, so I hope your optician can provide similar tests Koola & you can locate specialist ophthalmologists if needed.

TEDct have a Facebook group that might help you locate international support.

I have relatives in Piraeus & love visiting the mainland & islands! ☀️

more questions: it is difficult to diagnose? also, I thought TED was linked to Graves. I was hyper for years and it started with an exophtalmo, right eye. But now I've been hypo, after RAi 11 years ago.

TED is far more common with Graves, but some have it with an under active thyroid/ Hashis and some are euthyroid (no thyroid diagnosis). My TED specialist ophthalmologist says TED with Hashimotos is not uncommon.I definitely think it’s worth seeing a TED specialist ophthalmologist if you suspect you have this. The TEDct charity give excellent advice & helped me find a specialist local to me.

Unfortunately, I live on a small Greek island and there are no specialists. My ophthalmologist here seems very competent, but how can I tell? At least she's quiet and makes a lot of time and explains things etc. I'll see if she knows about TED and if not, if she's willing to research. Meanwhile I hope it's just some ordinary dryness or slight infection. I got enough hypo symptoms to last me another couple of lives!
