Stopped Carbmimazole completely

Carbimazole gave me issues, I tried 2 different brands and the results were the same. I had face to face chat with my GP what a surprise! I told him of the boating gas that stopped me eating, joint pain too, I said what I my supposed to do, the GP's reply to me was to stop carbmimazole, he told me I will end up in A&E I am too sensitive to this drug and any other anti-thyroid drugs eg PTU.

Do I have any regrets not taking it, not at all, I have learned to listen to my body, it reacted badly it was telling me to stop, I should have listened to my inner voice, anyway all is done now, will continue with natural medicine it worked before and it will work again for me.

Have you had consultation with an endocrinologist

This looks like possibly Hashimoto’s and Graves’ disease running at same time. Usually managed by endocrinologist by block (Carbimazole) and replace (levothyroxine)

Have you had coeliac blood test done

If not, push for testing BEFORE trying strictly gluten free diet

Bloating etc can be low stomach acid/gluten intolerance

Ferritin is low

Have you increased iron rich foods in diet

Aiming for ferritin at least around 70.

Are you currently taking any Vitamin D ?

Aiming to improve to at least around 80nmol and around 100nmol maybe better

B12 is low

No folate result?

I was seen by an Endocrinologist, he did his own blood testing too, results are the same, he did not mention possible Hashimatos too, the Endo is available to me, he is private, so I can call him anytime, however, I will also listen to my GP he has not abandoned me, as he will conduct liver and thyroid testing in a couple of months. My self I did not feel well on carbimazole having stopped it, I feel well. We shall see.

It’s dangerous to have such high Ft4 and Ft3

Recommend wearing a Fitbit or equivalent to record resting heart rate. Likely very high

Previous Low B12 result

This is presumably an NHS B12 result, ie a serum B12 result (not private active B12 test)

Low B12 symptoms

b12deficiency.info/signs-an...

With B12 result below 500, recommended to be taking a B12 supplement as well as a B Complex (to balance all the B vitamins) initially for first 2-4 months, then once your serum B12 is over 500 (or Active B12 level has reached 70), stop the B12 and just carry on with the B Complex.

Vitamin B complex

supplementing a good quality daily vitamin B complex, one with folate in (not folic acid) may be beneficial.

This can help keep all B vitamins in balance and will help improve B12 levels too

Difference between folate and folic acid

chriskresser.com/folate-vs-...

Many Hashimoto’s patients have MTHFR gene variation and can have trouble processing folic acid.

thyroidpharmacist.com/artic...

B vitamins best taken after breakfast

Igennus Super B is good quality and cheap vitamin B complex. Contains folate. Full dose is two tablets per day. Many/most people may only need one tablet per day. Certainly only start on one per day (or even half tablet per day for first couple of weeks)

Or Thorne Basic B is another option that contain folate, but is large capsule

If you are taking vitamin B complex, or any supplements containing biotin, remember to stop these 7 days before ALL BLOOD TESTS , as biotin can falsely affect test results

Ft4 and Ft3 are very high

You do need to be taking Carbimazole or PTU

Angel20 profile image
Angel20 in reply to SlowDragon

Wish I could, carbimazole has proved a no no for me, PTU will be the same too, I am too sensitive to these drugs, I am watching the thyroid I will still have my own bloods done privately monitor, even with high FT3 and FT4, low TSH, I had same results more or less coming up to 4 years now as one hospital Endo told me early 2020 my body has adjusted to the low tsh and high FT's.

I was only taking 10mg a day, another hospital Endo no so long ago, suggested I take 40mg carbimazole, this high amount would have finished me off, I would have ended in A&E, the script does not fit in with everyone, I am only 47kg. Each Endo has their own idea how to treat, I do not dismiss them, but many have made huge mistakes, that the patient has paid dearly.

Many Graves’ disease patients have very low vitamin levels and develop gluten intolerance

Getting vitamin levels optimal and trialing strictly gluten free diet may help

Have you had ultrasound scan of thyroid?

Such high thyroid antibodies suggests Hashimoto’s as well as Graves’ disease

Angel20 profile image
Angel20 in reply to SlowDragon

I am not gluten intorerance, I had the test in 2020, my iron is low, Vitamin D is ok. I had an ultrasound scan of my thyroid in 2019, it did suggest Hashimatos it is something I need to pick up and discuss with my GP, however 3 Endo's dismissed it, and said it was Graves Disease \ hperthyroidism. Last year before I found the Private Endocrinologist, I was seen my a hospital endocrinologist who wanted me to start on 40mg carbi, and suggested I have an ultrasound scan too, however, because of her rude attitude telling me she will send me back to my GP if I do not do what she says, to take 40mg carbi she would basically discharge me from the hospital, well I discharged myself from her care, doctors that do not listen to their patients, should not be practising.

The only way to know if you have gluten intolerance is to try strictly gluten free diet

Only 5% Hashimoto’s patients have coeliac

But an additional 80% find gluten free diet helps or is absolutely essential to make progress

You don’t need any obvious gut issues

If ultrasound suggests Hashimoto’s, (along with very high thyroid antibodies) then you likely have both Graves’ disease and Hashimoto’s at same time

I have been to a Private Endo in London. The issue here is not the Endo or GP, it is the tablets, these are making me unwell. The GP has not abandoned me, we will do thyroid tests in 2 months, will take it from there, but these tablets are not going to work for me, nor with RAI.

Hi. I cannot believe the answer given by your dr. How was this helpful in anyway. It just blows my mind. How r u feeling? My levels have been double yours and I only say that because I felt very unwell at these high levels. In no way is it a competition. Has no one offered any practical advice? My liver was also elevated when I was not taking any anti thyroid drugs. What would you like to do proceeding forward.

Angel20 profile image
Angel20 in reply to NIKEGIRL

I never had a liver problem, the recent bloods suggest I may have a liver issue induced by carbimazole, this why the GP wants me to have tests in a couple of months time. I trust the GP they know me very well, been with them for 10 years. I feel ok at least for now.
