Hyper thyroid and heart beat at night

Dear members,

Apologies for showering you with questions lately. New to hyper thyroid.

On my 1st month of taking carbimazole (40mg)

I keep waking up 2nd night in a row as if roasting inside my own body, cold sweat, heart pumping crazy. I can hear it and feel blood pumping even in my arms. Loss of sleep. I even went to measure my blood pressure and it is at it's most normal 120/70. And my pulse is 70 ( usually 95-105 recently). I haven't seen it this normal for some time. So what is pumping then inside me. Am I losing my plot? :(

Thanks for reading.

Hi. I get the heartbeat that I can hear when I lie in bed. Really off putting for sleep.

Hi Tromashka, have you had thyroid tests such as TSH or T4 test results. You are taking 40mg - a day? You can get medication from your Endo to help with this, have you told them. When I first started with hyperactive thyroid this is what I felt like. Valerie

Thank you for your response. I only identified the problem a month ago. My t3 and t4 are quite high over 200%, GP prescribed 40mg and thinks its appropriate. TPO ab show 15 (range 0-34). GPs refuse to take any further antibody tests . Waiting list for an endo 3-6 months so no specialist's help in immediate future :(

Hi Tromashka, I’m sorry but I don’t understand your results. In UK the tests seem to be different. We don’t have a 200% can you explain what that test was. If your range is in the half way range it would seem to be good. If the doctor has ruled everything bad out I can only think the horrid feelings at night with your rapid pulse could be because you are really frightened, probably of something you don’t understand. I am really worried that I may get Covid and that gets me into a cold sweat. if I have a headache or sore throat, immediately thinking the worst. I can only think of how I was when this all started about six years ago. Are you a reasonably fit person, eating well and having plenty of vitamins and proteins. This is very important when your thyroid is acting up as they need to be the higher end of the range for you to feel well. Your overall health is very important. Try and think of good things before you go to bed and take three deep breaths to feel calm. Valerie

Sorry, i didnt put my exact blood test results as i did that in my post just before this one and I didnt want to bore everybody with them. I'm fixing my mistake TSH <0.01. range 0.30-4.20

FT4 41.4( 2 weeks later 47.9). Range 10.5-22.8

FreeT3. 16.8. Range. 3.1 - 6.8

Anti-TRO ab. <15 kU/L. Range 0-34

Thank you for your advice.

I'm a fit person in early 40s, eating really well, no regular exercising though but very active at work.

Yes, I might be stressed with the unknown and lack of health doctor's understanding ... My vitamins are in the lower range but the GP dismisses the nessesity to supplement. Sure I'll just keep educating myself and taking supplements accordingly.

Thank you for your advice

You have bad palpitations. Please consult your doctor. He/she can prescribe you a beta blocker like propranolol. It does help with palpitations which is caused by the hyperthyroidism. Your thyroid hormone levels are very high; this is why you are experiencing these symptoms.

The beta blocker will help with symptoms as the carbimazole is given time to bring your thyroid hormone levels down.

Please make sure to get tested very regularly at this stage to monitor your thyroid status as u are on a relatively high dose of carbimazole.

Best wishes.

Hi Tromashka, many thanks for clearing that up. I can understand why you are feeling like you are. You will never be found boring no matter how many details you give , this is a lovely support forum. ling has told you the way and that was the way I went when I was starting with hyper. It’s really a frightening time when these symptoms are at their worst. My FT4 was over 70 and I was on 40mg carbimazole but with the propranolol I felt better. The one thing I was grateful for was I was hyper and the carbimazole works. If you read all the posts here you will see that that biggest problem is hypo and not been given enough thyroid meds to feel well. I can get enough carbimazole for my needs but you need to be monitored closely and often. The quide lines that doctors have to adhere to are difficult. I found I sometimes went down quickly and I couldn’t see my Endo at that time so I paid £29 for a private FT4 and TSH test to monitor myself. My doctor didn’t mind when I told him the results over the phone and lowered my meds. I was lucky some may not have liked it. Any way, the Endocrinologist will be able to give you more information on the why this is happening and if you want to share your concerns please do so we are all here for each other. Valerie
