I would like to know if more people here have the symptom of stiffness in both knees causing weakness and slowness in the contraction of the leg muscles. I have this symptom and would like to know if it is related to hypothyroidism. should i seek an orthopedist or will the optimization of thyroid treatment normalize this?
Thank you.

It’s hard to be sure. I get knee pain which comes on suddenly and then goes suddenly, but I have found physiotherapy helpful. If I do the exercises they gave me regularly, my muscles are much stronger and the pain less.
My knees hurt, after my thyroid removed I started to get pain in my hips, knees, ankles and feet. I had x-ray and dexa scan 2016 both showed strong bones but x-ray this year shows lost of cartilage on left hip after a fall.I gained a lot of weight after TT it took years to lose, so that doesn't help my knees. I have muscle atrophy in left thigh this is a new thing. Optimal thyroid meds got rid of loads of my symptoms but not knee / joint pain, stiffness. Could of course be old age 😃
it’s the front of my knees, the kneecaps that feel weak .. and yes that does have an effect therefore on the calf muscles .
I went to see an orthopaedic surgeon once for a problem with my hip .. turned out to be the tendons on my hip that was the problem but he inadvertently said after examination that my kneecaps were “loose” 🙀
I have since read that muscle , tendons and ligaments suffer greatly when our Thyroids are out of whack .
I started to take L Carnitine for it and I must say, it helped greatly, in fact I had a very painful Bursitis in my Hip for many years ..and it has now gone thanks to massage and L Carnitine. 🙏
Here are a few ideas. How old are you? As we get older joints and cartilage wear but this doesn't sound that painful to require surgery, an x-ray will show whether there is wear. Do you have irregular amounts of exercise, more one day than another? Do you do anything to help like massage or yoga? Do you swim? That builds muscle strength. Is this only appears in winter so affected by cold or dampness?
I find my knees are the first thing to start hurting and feel weak when my vitamin D is low - not out-of-range low, just lower than my body seems to like.
As someone said above it doesn’t sound like you are in pain so I would probably see a physiotherapist and hopefully get some exercises to build up your muscles and make you less stiff. Thing is if you do less because you are stiff etc things are only going to get worse.Saying that when I had Graves’ disease the muscles in my thighs became so weak I couldn’t get up off the ground without some sort of help so the thyroid does affect joints and muscles.
Pilates is good for keeping your body moving but find a well qualified teacher - there are a lot of physio led Pilates and yoga teachers around - who will only teach small groups. You don’t want to be in a huge class.
I’d say try to keep moving though or you just become more stiff.
My knees are fine but I have a hip problem. I don't believe it's connected with my thyroid at all. My first thought would be that it's age related, but perhaps you are young.
It's worth sharing your latest blood results and then people might be able to help you optimise your medication.
I think we do have to keep exercising to keep our joints strong and healthy. Just gentle walks for me 🙂
Wow this is such an interesting post. I noticed about four years ago when at a wedding that when I went to kneel in the church that I couldn’t because my knees were sore and weak but never related it to my Graves Disease which I had then so I was surprised to read this post today
I have since had a TT and am on NDT and a lot of supplements and will now see if my dosages are correct in order to improve my knees
It’s great what you can learn on this forum
I hope you have luck in sorting out your knee stiffness
Many cases of joint problems due to Graves, which in this case is an excess of thyroid hormone.
What I can say is that since I started having a low TSH my face has aged and my knees have rusted. All of this indicates that taking thyroid hormone decreases my collagen production, affecting my face and knee. I think I'm really going to see an orthopedic doctor.
Yes I have arthritic knees, also hips, spine, wrists, elbows and shoulders. Was diagnosed with osteopenia few years ago. Had hip replacement which did help my right knee.
