Curious symptoms...

Hi folks

I have no idea if this is thyroid related or not, googling hasn't yielded much information...

Over the past week there has developed a low humming in my ears, it's definitely caused internally as it gets louder when I cup my hand over my ear. It's not constant, more randomly wavering like the buzz of a fly (but of a different timbre) and it's not noticeably related to my heartbeat. I understand this could be run-of-the-mill tinnitus, and I'm going to call the doc tomorrow.

The curious part is that, for something like the same amount of time, I have been able to hear my eyeballs move. Not all the time, usually I notice it in the evening (typically when my partner and I are playing a board game and everything is quiet) and it may be related to being a little dehydrated (although I do try to drink enough liquid).

Obviously I'm going to ask my GP, but I just wondered if anyone had come across anything like this before?

Thanks in advance

M x

Is it just your eye movements you hear or are any other body movements amplified? Search - superior canal dehiscence syndrome.

Thanks - I've only noticed my eye movements, I found some info about SCDS but it doesn't seem to fit entirely.

Over the past week there has developed a low humming in my ears,

I've had tinnitus for decades. It does fluctuate in severity quite dramatically. In the last few months it has been less intrusive than usual for me. But I have noticed it has got substantially worse this week. I have no idea why.

Coincidentally, I read this a few days ago and you may find it of interest :

When I googled this :

can people hear their eyes moving

I got a few results you may want to read.

Thanks - yes I googled something similar, read a few, the only thing I found was superior canal dehiscence syndrome which seems to be more severe than what I'm experiencing. I guess if it is SCDS it is very mild, as its only occasional and only my eyes, it's just weird and I wanted to check it's not a symptom of something worse. Hopefully the doc will be useful. :)

Really? wow thats interesting. I know tinnitus is on the list of symptoms for hypo-ness, didn't realise it was B12 deficiency too. I wonder what causes that?

I always chalked it up to me being unlucky😉

Spoke to the doc, he reckons that it's likely to be the result of water getting stuck behind wax in my ear. Internal sounds are amplified, and its the eye muscles I can hear. Which seems more likely to me than SCDS. Will report back if there is anything to report, thanks for your help!

I get crazy tinnitus - high pitched noise since I was a child - lately it suddenly gets really loud in one ear for a short time. Also get a varied two tone horrid sound, like a fax machine occasionally. The humming is quite nice, sometimes i cannot tell whether it is an outside noise, sounds like an aeroplane. It gets much louder if unwell.

I've had pulsatile tinnitus a few times.

I also get sudden muffled hearing in one ear, or it sounds like I'm hearing down a tube.

The scariest was this year, sudden deafening noise in one ear, like I could hear the inside sounds of my ears, especially when I touched the lobe. So scary, I completely panicked, then 5 minutes later it just switched off. No idea what that was.

Awaiting more thyroid testing/ diagnosis.

wow, sorry that doesn't sound like much fun! Mine is much less invasive, the droning sound is quite low pitch, I don't mind it that much. The eye noises just weird me out though - especially as they often come when I'm tired and can't deal with it!

Hope you get some relief/answers

I'm really used to most of it, so I just ignore things but I know what you mean about the tired situation- my right foot used to feel like it vanished when I'd overdone it, it was my cue to lie down for a day or so.

But your situation sounds disconcerting . I hope you find out what's causing it. Best wishes.
